Nathan gave me a knowing look. “You’ll love it, I can promise you that. Life is for playing and we sure understand the rules of the game.” He winked at me and finished off his drink. "Oh, look at that. My drink is finished. Time for another. Care for something stronger than champagne?”

I looked at my half full glass. I was being careful, but not that careful. One cognac wouldn’t hurt.

Nathan and I headed to the bar where we both ordered a glass of Hennessy Particuliere Limited Edition. At $27,000 a bottle, we were like peacocks, proudly displaying our wealth.

Professor Owens appeared behind us, impressed with our extravagant purchase.

“You know how to spend your money, boys.”

I took a sip of the amber liquid. “What’s the point of being mega rich if you don’t spend it,” I said, purposely obnoxious.

“Yes, indeed.”

“Would you like a glass, Professor?”

“Why, I don’t mind if I do.”

I leaned over the bar and motioned for the bartender to fill another glass with the good stuff. He poured another one and Professor Owens picked it up and took a sip. As he swallowed, he closed his eyes and smiled widely.

“Ahhh, nectar!”

We all chuckled and Nathan and I looked at each other knowingly.

“So, Christos. Are you enjoying your evening?”

“Yes, I am. I’ve met so many people already.”

“Good. I really think you’ll fit in nicely. You have exactly what we’re looking for in our members. Wealth, power and contacts – if you’ll pardon my rudeness, talking about things such as this.”

“No. I understand completely. I certainly think I’ll get along very well. I’m interested to see what happens after tonight.”

“Don’t worry. We’ll be in contact with you. We have a special ceremonial event that will take place very soon. You’ll know it when it happens.”

“Sounds interesting. I’m very intrigued.”

Professor Owens smiled at me, his eyes twinkling. “I’m sure you’re very excited, as you should be. We can open up a whole new world of possibilities for you. Now if you’ll excuse me, gentlemen, I must go and speak to Professor Xavier before he leaves. He always leaves early at these events and I must catch him before he goes. Enjoy the rest of your evening.”

“Goodnight, Professor Owens,” Nathan and I said in unison.

Nathan smiled and took a drink from his glass. “What a good sport he is, don’t you think?”

“Yes. He’s a very charismatic man. I like him very much. Is he heavily involved in this secret society?”

“You could say that. He’s one of the leadership. Of course, I shouldn’t be telling you this, but seeing as you’re going to be joining us soon, where’s the harm?”

I nodded. “I understand. Yes, I’m excited to see how this whole thing pans out.”

“Just keep your wits about you.”

Nathan gave me a strange look and then smiled again. I wondered what he meant by that. Was that a threat or friendly advice? Regardless, I was planning to keep my wits about me anyway.

Now I would just have to wait until they made their next move.

Chapter 10 – Amber

OnThursdaynight,Iknocked on Christos’ door and waited. I was nervous. He hadn’t invited me around and I didn’t even know if he was going to be in.

He opened the door in a pair of running shorts and a white tee. He had a towel around his neck and he looked as though he’d been doing some form of exercise. Sweat dripped off him, making him look even sexier than I thought was possible. I swallowed, hard.
