“Things could happen to all of us. You don’t have to think about it at this point. They want to fuck with me more than they want to destroy them. Your sister is very valuable to them. It’s their leverage. Doing something to her would finish them.”
I sigh.
I hope he’s right.
Suddenly, I no longer feel like talking, so I just press the back of my head against the headrest and look up.
“Are you going to talk to them?” I ask after a while.
His answer doesn’t come immediately.
“Yeah. Something like that,” he says, and I know exactly what he has in mind.

DAMASO
Midnight in LA
“She hates you,”Vito says as we both watch Louie slam the door to the black SUV, signaling to the other two cars to start moving.
“It’s better to be alive and hateful than full of love and dead,” I mutter, rolling the window up.
Carmina knows I’m right.
Her being with me right now makes me more vulnerable and puts a target on her back. I need to protect her before dealing with these scumbags and getting Tina back.
I know she’s not happy. I saw it in her eyes.
She had a ton of arguments about why this wasn’t what she wanted. I understand her fears, but she won’t help me by making a mistake.
There is no room for errors.
The fact that they killed the men in charge of watching her sister is a clear message.
They want violence.
They use violence to send a message, and they’ll get what they want. Right now, they expect a visit from me.
I have all the information that I need, and what I do with it is not their business.
All I want is for her not to be put in harm’s way.
I signal to the driver, and our car glides away.
Half an hour later, I enter one of my properties in Hollywood Hills. Twenty armed men follow me into the basement, which is a bona fide bunker.
I’ve been getting ready for this day for a while. I didn’t envision it to be like this or that the life of a teenage girl would be at stake, but this is life. Things are never how we expect them to be.
We’re spending an hour inside.
I give my men instructions before they climb into their cars and leave.
Four men are here with me, Vito, Gianni, and two of my bodyguards, while the others guard the place.
Louie just texted me. Things go as planned, and their trip has been uneventful so far.
Carmina and I have agreed not to talk on the phone as long as this operation is underway.
