If she becomes a target because of me, she automatically receives my protection because she is with me. It goes without saying.

But there is more than that.

I’m not gonna lie. This is a tough life. I make tough decisions, and no matter what code of honor I abide by, some lines can never be crossed, not even by her.

It has to do with loyalty and trust. I value those above anything else.

But even if I believe in her, other people will test her.

My enemies will test her, and the life I live will punish her one way or another.

This is not a matter of liking her. I like her a lot. Maybe more than I should. But having a future with her is not on my mind.

Although I’m no fool.

Our path will take us there whether we want it or not.

My hand slides into her hair while I press my lips against her head. There is something so calming in the fact that she feels at ease with me.

I can feel her warmth and trustfulness as she wraps her arms around me.

She needs me more than I ever thought a woman could need me. And this is so valuable and reassuring I stay silent a little longer and enjoy it fully.

Life has never been more beautiful and kind, and I don’t want this to end.

“Can we stay a little longer?” I say.

My voice is even, quiet, and smooth like honey, while my heart beats fast.

“Sure,” he says, relaxing in his seat.

He reclines it a little more and pushes it back so we have room for our legs and lie comfortably side by side.

“Are you cold?” he asks.

The window is still down, and the wind blows, but I’m only aware of the heat coming from his body.

“I’m good,” I say, studying his face.

He shifts his gaze to me, a faint smile tugging at his lips.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” he asks.

I straighten and rest my hand on his chest.

“I never thought you’d be like this.”

He laughs softly.

“How did you think I was?”
