Maybe she wasn’t tied at that point.

“Uh…”

Something falls in the background, like a big box or something.

“Got her,” he says. “She’s hidden behind a stack of boxes.”

“Breathing?”

“I need to check.”

The moments are longer than I’d like.

“Yup. She’s breathing, but she’s unconscious.”

“Take her out, call my doctor, and get her into a private hospital room. He knows what he needs to do.”

I end the call, put the cigarette out, and walk back with my gun cocked.

The room is how I left it.

Three men sit at the table.

Joe Lizard is one of them.

I kill another of his men before I put the barrel of my gun at the back of his head.

“Who ordered this hit?”

His face is pale in the dim light.

Things no longer seem funny.

“All right,” I say, realizing he won’t answer. “I don’t need your fucking answer.”

I’m just about to pull the trigger when his phone chimes, alerting him someone has texted him.

And then his phone starts ringing.

He looks at me while I’m extremely curious about that call.

“Answer the fucking call,” I say.

He looks at me, spooked.

“Pick it up,” I bark.

He snatches his phone, takes the call, and starts talking.

It doesn’t take long and satisfaction rolls over his face.

“This couldn’t have come at a better time. Wait for my orders. If you don’t hear from me, just kill her or sell her to the Mexican cartels,” Joe says before looking at me smugly. “So… You can go ahead and kill me if you still want to do it,” he mutters. “But your woman is mine now.”
