“I have no idea. They got Jen, too. And my aunt just confirmed my sister had vanished.”

CARMINA
This must bethe longest flight I’ve ever been on, not because it’s long––it is––but because I’m frozen in my seat, numb, unable to speak.
Jen and Tina are still missing.
Damaso is on the phone with his people, looking for my sister. Stella didn’t get back to me. As usual, my father is out of the loop.
I feel like I’m dying.
If anything happens to Tina—something bad has already happened–-I will never forgive myself.
I can’t eat.
I can’t drink.
I’m completely broken.
My aunt is still waiting. She hasn’t called the cops.
Damaso is convinced he has a better chance of finding her if she doesn't call the police.
I’m not so sure there’s anything that could save her at this point. I wish I could go to sleep, wake up, and find out this has only been a nightmare.
I call my aunt again, hoping for some good news.
Sadly, everything is the same.
When the frown on Damaso’s face deepens, I end my conversation with my aunt, afraid he might have some bad news.
He seems unusually calm when he ends his conversation, slides his phone onto the table, and leans back in his seat, sucking in a long breath and slowly exhaling.
“What’s going on?” I ask, looking at him. Vito and the other men sit not far from us.
Damaso looks at me with no emotion on his face. And that only confirms things are bad.
I slide my hand up his arm.
“Please tell me,” I say quietly.
His eyes read mine.
He’s trying to learn whether I’m ready to hear the truth or not.
“Your aunt’s place had been surveilled for a while,” he says quietly as well.
“How do you know?”
“I had people over there.”
“What?”
A bad feeling jabs at me.
“Did they see what happened?”
