“He’s there?”I ask, holding my phone between my shoulder and my ear and setting plates of food on the tray.

“Yes,” Jen says. “I just talked to Stella. She told him you were in town and worked this evening.”

“What did he say?”

“Nothing.”

“So typical of him. All right. I’ll leave in an hour or so.”

“How’s work?”

“Are you asking me if I like it?” I say, cracking a smile.

“Uh-huh.”

“I do. You know I do. I miss doing this.”

“You’re no longer working as a waitress?”

“I haven’t done it much lately.”

“You’re living the life, huh?”

I laugh.

“Yes.”

“When will you tell me more about that boss of yours?”

“Not now, for sure. I’m busy.”

“Sure. Of course you are.”

“What’s Tina doing?”

“She was watching a movie the last time I checked on her. Let me see.”

She walks away, and I’m anxiously waiting for her to return since I need to take the food to the tables.

“Come on…” I murmur under my breath.

“She’s sleeping,” she says a moment later.

“Perfect. I’ll call you later then. I need to go now.”

“Sure.”
