“Be there in a minute.” I manage in response. Despite my efforts, my voice ends up sounding as flat as a corpse. I take one last glance at myself and give myself one last shake, forcing a half smile to myself before stepping out of the closet. Jessica is gone by the time I make it into the room, but Christie is waiting with a warm smile that does nothing to ease the pit growing in my stomach. I glare daggers at her in return.
“You’re doing great.” She whispers, offering thumb ups in my direction.
I huff in response, ignoring her completely before walking out the door.
One hour later and I’m already bored to death. In spite of how I try, no matter what I do I am unable to get comfortable, and I swear every muscle in my body aches. Even the air in the room feels stuffy. When Christie suggests we turn on a movie, I immediately jump at the idea. Anything to have everyone shut the fuck up and give me a moment of quiet relief from the sound of their voices.
Tanya refuses though, claiming it’s still early and there’s still a lot of games to play and that a movie should be the last thing on our list. The girls agree with her and my night of suffering lingers on.
“How about we play Truth or Dare? I’m dying to know what horrors you ladies have been up to since we parted ways.” Annabelle asks, a wicked gleam in her brown eyes. Petit, blonde, with a temper that makes your teeth rattle when she gets angry, Annabelle is one of those people that you don’t want to say no to. So when Annabelle suggests the game everyone agrees with eagerness. Except me of course. Indifference might be more accurate. I would rather head to bed now.
“Alright, how do we play?” Tanya asks, turning to Christie who shrugs.
Annabelle’s high pitched laughter fills the room before she answers. “C’mon. One year after College and you all suddenly hit factory reset?” She snorts derisively.
“Don’t look at me. I never did like the game.” Christie admits with a small smirk.
“Me neither.” Jessica adds.
But you liked sleeping with your friend’s boyfriend, I think to myself bitterly and push the thought aside.
“Well alright. It starts simple enough.” Annabelle says after a moment. “Got any alcohol, Christie?”
“Sure. Over in the fridge, help yourself.” She replies.
The sofa creaks as Annabelle stands and heads towards the kitchen. When she returns, she’s already having a swig from a bottle of beer with a couple more in a paper bag. A round of cheers goes up as she settles next to Jess on the sofa opposite mine. Tanya and Christie sit directly beside each other on the love seat while I sit alone on the end cushion.
“So who’s ready to go first?” Annabelle asks excitedly, leaning forward on the couch. “Oh yeah, Christie…”
Christie sighs heavily. “Fine… Fine…”
She spins the bottle on the table and it slows to a stop, landing perfectly on Jess who rolls her eyes. “Truth or dare, sweetie?”Christie teases.
Jessica grins cheekily. “Truth. No way I’m letting your dirty mind force me into doing anything crazy this evening.”
“Alright. Are you seeing anyone?” Christie probes, batting her eyelashes at Jess.
The smile slides right off her face, replaced with a grimace. “God, you’ve known me for quite a few years now. I can’t stay single so yeah, I am. Two guys actually.”
Bitch,I think, glaring at her in disgust. What a bitch. Never seen someone so proud of themselves for being able a whore.
“Is it the cute guy I saw you having a video call with earlier?” Tanya asks.
I can feel myself starting to lose my cool as Jessica nods. “Yeah, his name’s Mark. He’s really nice and he’s really cute too. I'll show you the other later.”
“Have you guys had sex?” Annabelle pipes up from the sofa.
Jess blushes slightly, shrugging. “That’s one question too many. Who spins next?”
“You.” Annabelle says with a grin.
She spins the bottle around again with the room falling into silence as the glass slows to a halt, eventually settling on me. I scowl down at the carpeted floor, wishing desperately that I was anywhere but here. I can’t help but wonder if my feelings are written all over my expression, as my friends stare at me curiously.
“Babe, what’s wrong? You seem quite upset.”
“Nothing,” I respond quickly. Too quickly, as it only raises more alarm.
“C’mon. You can tell us anything.” Tanya leans forward, resting her elbows on her knees and giving me her best puppy dog eyes.
