He grins, lowering his glass and taking another sip of wine. “It was a friend from work.”

I raise my eyebrows, staring intently at his face, looking for any indication of whether he’s being genuine.

“Oh? Who?”

“Again, jealous girlfriend.”

“Whatever,” I groan, rolling my eyes.

“I got invited to an art exhibition in Paris next week. I'll be needing my assistant to join me.” He tells me, looking me straight in the eyes.

“You’re kidding?”

He shakes his head. “Nope. And apparently you could do with some time away from all the chaos.. right?”

“What are you, my boyfriend as well as my boss now?” I retort playfully.

“If you want me to be both, then…sure.”

My jaw drops open. My cheeks flush bright red and I avert my gaze from him. He chuckles, reaching out a hand towards me and gently brushing against the side of my arm with his thumb in a gentle caress.

“C’mon, Lily. I was joking.” He murmurs, retracting his hand immediately when he notices the furious blush on my cheeks.

“It’s fine.” I mumble, attempting to compose myself before turning my attention to my plate again. “So do I have a choice in this matter?”

He smirks slightly, raising an eyebrow. “You’re still my assistant right?”

“Yeah.”

“Then you’re coming with me. End of discussion.”

I glance up and see his signature smug expression, along with a slight smile playing on his lips. “But I don’t want to!” I argue, causing him to chuckle yet again and shake his head.

“End of discussion.”

Chapter17

Liam

“Inever knew you owned a jet.” Lily says as she takes a seat across from me, a glass of champagne in her hand.

I smile, feeling somewhat proud about my little purchase. “There’s a lot of things you don’t know about me.”

I watch as she peeps out the window, admiring the view of New York city sprawled before her; the skyscrapers glistening in the sunbeams and the reflections of the glass windows twinkling behind them like diamonds. Her hair falls about her face, framing it perfectly like an angel’s veil. When she turns back to me, her eyes are shining like emeralds, and twinkling with excitement. I never thought the day would come that she would look at me with a smile on her face. Damn, she looks beautiful when she’s not frowning.

My gaze lingers on her face a little longer than necessary because god knows, it’s hard to tear my eyes away from her. Her eyes narrow, and I realize I’ve been caught staring. “What? What are you looking at?” She asks, blushing a little bit as she sets down her glass. “Stop gawking. It’s rude.”

I hold my hands up in mock surrender, stifling a laugh. “My bad. I just couldn’t help myself.”

She rolls her eyes as she reaches for the glass again. “I don’t get it. You’ve seen me about a million times already, maybe more. What’s changed?”

“Let’s just say you look a lot different when you’re not scowling.” She laughs at this, throwing her head back in glee. The sunlight catches her skin and turns it into a golden glow. It highlights the flecks of green in her irises like a halo.

We go quiet for a moment, Lily finishing her drink and me taking another sip of mine. She leans forward, elbows resting on the table, chin propped on her knuckles. A strand of her long dark hair hangs loose, brushing against her cheek. Her lips part slightly as she inhales deeply, letting the air hiss out through them, then she fixes her eyes on me again, studying me. “You’re still staring.”

“Am I?” I ask. She nods, eyes widening ever so slightly in surprise, but then her mouth twists into a grin and she shakes her head. I can’t help grinning as well. We both look at each other in silence for a minute, smiling like fools.

“I never would have believed we would ever sit like we’re doing now, and actually smile at each other.”
