“We didn’t think it would gain as much traction as it did. We were about to put out a statement when the second article was released. That’s when we realized this was bigger than a magazine trying to use me for attention,” Adam says.
“And was their source an employee, as they cited?” Winter asks.
“Yes, someone was attempting to get revenge on me for a business decision I made. I take full responsibility for how I handled the situation, but I don’t condone their actions.”
“Was there any truth to the articles?”
“I did date Sasha, but not while she was an escort.”
“Unfortunately, these articles aren’t the only drama happening in your life. Ellie, what is your connection to Clifford Byrnes Junior?”
“He, along with his family, were friends with my parents. Clifford Senior hired me as an intern for his company, Legends, where I was later assaulted by Junior.” As I speak, Adam’s thumb slides back and forth across the top of my hand. His silent comfort allows my words to come out strong.
“I’m so sorry that happened to you. Will you explain your decision not to press charges?”
“The detectives working the case laid out what evidence they could use in a trial, and I knew there was no way I’d win. The Byrnes family has a multitude of resources that I’d never be able to match, and a nasty court battle wasn’t something I wanted to put myself through.”
“Are you aware of how many other women were also attacked?”
“I found out about them last week when Junior was arrested. It’s sickening to see how long he’s gotten away with his crimes.”
“How have you been doing after this second attack?”
It takes me a minute to get my emotions under control to explain how I’ve been feeling since everything happened. The loss of control was the worst part of it. I was thrown back to a time when I couldn’t defend myself, and finally being able to was empowering. I do my best to articulate my thoughts, and through it all, Adam doesn’t let go of my hand for a single moment.
“Wow, that must’ve been so scary. It’s a good reminder to brush up on my self-defense skills.” Winter smiles. I’m immensely grateful for her change in subject. She really is good at her job.
“I am incredibly lucky to have had that knowledge. Things would’ve turned out much worse had I not known what to do.”
“And I’m sure you have a lot of people in your life who are grateful you’re okay.”
Winter’s comment stops me for a second. Normally, the only people who would come to mind are Katie and Sue. But now I have Adam and his whole family supporting me.
“Yes, we are,” Adam responds.
“What’s next for you two? Ellie, are you sticking around Sidelines?”
“I’ll be there until the end of the year, and then I’m going back to school for graphic design. I’ve started doing some freelance work and am planning to start my own business after I graduate.” When I told Adam that I got into the design program, I thought he was going to burst with pride. He asked me to continue drawing for Sidelines after I start back to school, and since our conversation yesterday, I’ve had two other businesses in town reach out, as well. I have no doubt that Adam pulled some strings, but I’m confident enough in my skills to keep those businesses happy.
“How exciting for you. Adam, any big announcements you want to share?” Winter’s grin is hopeful.
“I plan on continuing to build my family’s legacy at Sidelines and wooing this girl as much as possible so she doesn’t remember how grumpy I can be.” Adam knocks his elbow into my side, and I laugh.
“Who would be against a little wooing?” Winter winks.
“Not me, that’s for sure.”
“Thank you both for allowing me to do this interview. It should air in a few days, but we’ll send Jessica all the details.” Winter stands, and Adam and I follow suit. We shake hands with Winter as the crew begins tearing down their equipment. Before I know it, Adam’s office is cleared out, leaving us alone in the quiet space.
A nervous energy thrums through me. The last time I was in here, I broke more than just my own heart. With all the action of the interview, I hadn’t thought about being in this room again.
I turn to look at Adam, my fingers clasped in front of me. He’s leaning against his desk with his arms crossed over his chest. His expression is blank, almost as shuttered as our last meeting. I’d bet he’s thinking about that day, too.
“There was such a large lump in my throat, I could barely get those words to come out.” My eyes stay locked on Adam’s, desperately trying to get a read on him. “I sat in my car and cried for almost an hour after I left.”
Adam’s shoulders drop, his demeanor softening toward me. He holds out his hand as an invitation, and I immediately go to him. I revel in the comfort of his arms around me. I wish I didn’t have this stupid sling keeping me from squeezing him tight.
“I’m so sorry, Adam. I should’ve trusted that you would believe me. I should’ve told you what was happening right then. I was just so scared.” Tears choke me up and put an end to my babbling.
