He looked up, but it was too late. The car with the shooter was gone.

Nylah’s heart thudded loudly. Screams and cries sounded from the group of people standing a few feet away, some on the phone to police or paramedics already.

Liam leaned to the side and rolled Nylah to her back, checking her quickly for injuries. “Are you okay?”

Her mouth was open, face pale. “Yes.”

She turned her head, and he followed her gaze to see Carlson still on the pavement. The police officer was on his back, head turned away from them. Liam didn’t need to get any closer to know he wasn’t breathing. Kill shot to the heart.

“I think I’m going to be sick.”

He tugged her face back to him. “Don’t look at him, honey.”

She swallowed and sounded like she was on the verge of hyperventilating. He tugged her to her feet, then held her shoulders. “Breathe.”

She nodded, sucking in deeper breaths, staring at him like he was her lifeline. “I’m okay now,” she said finally.

He cupped her cheek. “What were you thinking, following him out here?”

“I—”

The door to the bar opened, and his friends rushed outside, surrounding them.

Cody grabbed Nylah’s arm, his gaze moving over her body. “Are you hurt?”

She shook her head, face still too pale. When Cody pulled her into his arms, Liam wanted to growl at having to let the woman go.

“Have police been called?” Logan asked.

Liam nodded.

Five minutes later, everyone had arrived—police, paramedics. No one caught the damn registration plate, which was frustrating as hell. When it was Nylah’s turn to talk to police, a bit of color had returned to her face, but not much.

“And why did you follow him outside, Miss Walker?” the officer asked.

She wet her lips, gaze shifting to Liam, then back to the officer. “I was just curious where he was going.”

Liam watched her carefully. She’d just lied. Why?

“Do you know who he was talking to?”

“No.” She shook her head.

Truth.

“I could barely hear what he was saying.”

Another lie.

The officer nodded. “And what happened when he came out here?”

“He was still on the phone. I’d only just stepped out when the gunshot fired, then Liam threw me to the ground.”

The officer turned to Liam. He looked angry. But then, all the officers looked angry. Because one of their own had been killed tonight. “Is there anything you’d like to add, Mr. Shore?”

Liam shook his head. He’d already given his statement.

Frustration crossed the guy’s face. “If you remember anything else later, please let us know.”
