She frowned. “What—”
Suddenly, he threw his body on top of hers.
Glass shattered as bullets peppered the coffee shop.

“Bryce Burger.A Canadian-born systems administrator and hacker. Suspected of hacking over fifty US military and government databases in just the last five years.”
Liam frowned at Steve’s words. The suspect’s image briefly appeared on the video screen in the office, but Liam, Tyler, Flynn, and Blake all had their eyes on the man’s bio.
“You really think this could be Hawk?” Tyler asked, shifting through the printed files in front of him.
“It’s possible,” Steve said. “He has the ability to manage untraceable forms of communication. To hack into the profiles of US citizens and identify people who would be interested in joining his cause. He’s been on our watch list for a while but went underground about a year ago. Now it’s just a matter of locating him.”
Liam ran a hand through his hair. “I don’t know, Steve. Firstly, he’s not American, and these men who want us dead seem to be really territorial over their country. I get the feeling they think they’re saving our nation from us. Secondly, it says here he was specifically looking for information on UFOs and antigravity technology.”
Flynn leaned forward. “A profiler also made a comment about him having poor communication skills. I can’t see this man convincing dozens of people to fight in his war.”
Steve scrubbed a hand over his face. He looked tired. But then, he always looked overworked. “I know. It’s not optimal, but it’s the best we have at the moment. We’ll keep searching for other possibilities on our end. In the meantime, we’re also going to keep looking into Burger. The guy may be off in his own world, but he’s incredibly intelligent and a big threat regardless. And now that you have his photo, you can keep an eye out for him too.”
The guys all nodded, but Liam still wasn’t convinced. Everything in him said this was the wrong guy. Hell, just looking at the man’s photo made him think they were wrong. Call it gut instinct.
“Liam, how’s Nylah?” Steve asked.
“Good.” He lowered the profile to the table and leaned back in his chair. “Everything’s been quiet for a few days, but we’re making sure she’s always protected.”
“I’m glad she’s safe. Any idea why she might be a target?”
He shook his head, his jaw grinding. “No. And I don’t think we’ll find out until we catch this Hawk guy and make him talk. We just have to keep her safe until that point.”
It was frustrating as hell that their entire plan was to just watch and wait. He felt like she was a sitting duck, and they were trying to be the wall around her.
“We’ll get there,” Steve said quietly, determination in his eyes.
“I know we will.”
“In the meantime, watch your backs. There have already been too many attacks for my liking, both on your team and the guys in Texas.”
Even one attack was too many, dammit.
When the meeting ended, Liam shot a look at the time to see it was his turn to take over from Jason. If it was up to him, he’d be guarding Nylah every goddamn minute of the day. But he knew that would risk suffocating her. Plus, she needed some time with her brother.
As he passed Blake’s office on his way out, he stopped to see his friend reading over Burger’s profile again.
“You on the same page about this?” Liam asked.
Blake set down the papers. “He doesn’t fit what we’re looking for. And more than that, my gut says it’s not him.”
“Exactly what I’m feeling.”
“The FBI has obviously profiled the guy and decided he fits the parameters, and because they have no one else—”
“They’re desperate.”
“Yep.”
He shook his head, hating that they pretty much had nothing. “How’s Willow and Mila?”
