He scowled, but there was a hint of a smile on his face. “I should have known. Jace loved to blame shit on me.”
Nylah chuckled. It was true. He was the troublemaker of the group.
Courtney came to stop at the table. “Hey, how’re you doing today, Ny?”
“I’m good,” she said with a smile. “I don’t think you officially met my brother yesterday. This is my twin, Cody.”
Cody dipped his head. “Good to meet you.”
“You too.” Courtney shook her head. “Man, you fit right in with the Blue Halo guys. What are you? Marines? Navy?”
One side of Cody’s mouth lifted. “Army.”
“Figures. Everyone’s so badass in this town.” Her smile grew. “Lucky for me, I love serving people who have protected our country. How do you take your coffee?”
“Black. Thanks.”
“Double shot latte, please,” Nylah said quickly. Probably too quickly. It was three in the afternoon, and she was at that midafternoon, zero-energy point.
“You got it.”
Courtney had just left the table when Nylah’s phone rang. She pulled it out and groaned.
Cody raised a brow. “Eastern or—”
“Kayden. What did you tell him?”
“The truth. I actually thought he’d call much earlier.”
If he knew what was going on here in Cradle Mountain, she was surprised he hadn’t called sooner too. With a sigh, she answered the phone. “Hey, K.”
“Are you okay?”
“Yes.”
“You should have told me.”
She traced a finger over the edge of the table. “You know why I didn’t.”
“You should have come home after that first shootout.”
That earned him a frown. “According to you.”
“Yeah. According to me.”
“Kayden—”
“But I’m glad you’re okay. Cody told me you have a small army protecting you and I should keep my ass out of that town.”
Her lips twitched. “Yeah, I do. The guys here are awesome. Does this mean you’re trusting Cody on that and staying away?”
“I’m staying away fornow.”
Relief washed over her limbs. She’d expected a fight from Kayden. For him to be completely inflexible about wanting to be here. She looked over at Cody, mouthing a silent thank-you. He’d clearly worked some kind of magic.
“What’s this I hear about you dating someone?”
Suddenly, she felt a bit less gratitude toward Cody. “His name’s Liam Shore. He works at Blue Halo Security.”
