Last night—the night of the fire.

Callum scrolled up, and Liam focused on one of the messages in the thread.

She needs to be eliminated. She could compromise the mission.

The fuck?

Callum was scrolling up again when the screen suddenly went black.

“Shit!” he growled, madly typing.

“What’s going on?” Carlson asked.

“Someone’s remotely attacking the operating system.” He kept typing, but after only a few seconds, he leaned back, fists slamming against the desk. “It’s gone. Someone with a lot of fucking hacking skills destroyed all the data.”

“You are one tough woman, coming into work today,” Violet said quietly as they stood behind the counter.

Nylah smiled as she frothed the milk for a cappuccino. Her shift at The Grind was almost over. It hadn’t been too crazy today, which was lucky, because a busier day would’ve meant instead of having one bodyguard in the coffee shop, Liam would have assigned two.

Her gaze shifted to Tyler, who sat at a table with an open laptop, before shifting back to Violet. “Keeping busy feels good. It takes my mind off things.”

Liam had tried to convince her to take the day off and hang out at his office, but firstly, she needed money so she could resume her studies at Columbia. And secondly, what would she do at his office but go stir-crazy?

Eleanor brushed past them, nudging Violet. “Haven’t you heard? She’s made of steel.”

Nylah laughed. “I’m definitely not. Maybe you guys just make this job so fun, there’s nowhere I’d rather be.”

“Yeah, we really do,” Violet said with a smirk.

Eleanor touched her shoulder. “We’re just glad you’re okay.”

“Thank you.” Nylah smiled as she turned to her next customer.

Shifts here always passed quickly, busy or otherwise. And she hadn’t been lying—being heredidtake her mind off things. Hell, she could almost forget that someone had tried to kill her last night…almost.

She swallowed, her mind never far from the call she still needed to make.

She’d briefly turned her phone on last night to text Paisley and tell her she was okay and would call her today. This morning, she’d woken to half a dozen missed calls. She’d tried Paisley before coming to work, but her friend hadn’t answered.

Was it terrible that a part of Nylah was relieved? She’d left a message asking her to call back, letting her know when she was off work, and she was sure when she checked her phone after her shift, she’d have another half a dozen missed calls from her friend.

And then there were her brothers… Argh, she couldn’t even think about them without her belly doing a nervous turn. They were gonna kill her for not telling them everything sooner. Then they were either going to drag her ass home or come here, guns blazing—literally.

When she next looked at the clock, it was her finishing time.

After saying goodbye to everyone, she headed to the door. Tyler was already there and holding it open for her.

She smiled at him as she passed. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

Once they were in the car and driving, she shot a quick look his way. “Thank you for sitting in the coffee shop all day. I hope it wasn’t too boring.”

Boring was good though, right? Boring meant no surprise attacks or gunshots or fires.

“With all the coffee you guys brought me? Definitely not boring. Plus, I got plenty of work done on my laptop.” He flicked a quick glance at her before looking back at the road again. “You doing okay today?”
