So far, Steve hadn’t been able to get them clearance to question the families of any of the deceased.Whyhe couldn’t do so, Liam had no fucking idea. So Callum had found this address on his own. They weren’t supposed to be here, but they were past caring. No one had been able to find anything of interest, and if his team didn’t act, they were sitting ducks.

A shuffling noise sounded from inside. When a beat passed and no one came to the door, Liam knocked again, this time louder.

There was a huff, then the click of shoes against floorboards before a middle-aged redheaded woman opened the door. “Who are you?”

“Hello, ma’am. I’m Callum Thomas and this is Liam Shore. We’re here to ask you a few questions about your husband, Murphy Reynolds.”

“I’ve already spoken to the police, so fuck off.”

She tried to close the door, but Liam shoved his foot in front of the wood. It was an effort to keep his voice calm. “We’re here under instructions from the FBI.” Not true at all, but if lying got them in, they’d tell this woman whatever she needed to hear. “And we’re not leaving until you speak to us.”

The woman’s lips pursed, then she rolled her eyes and stepped back. “Fine, but you’d better be the last.”

She moved into the shabby living area, grabbed a bottle of vodka, and added a slug to whatever was already in her mug. “Well, come on. Ask. The sooner you start, the sooner you leave.”

Liam closed the door behind them, while Callum stepped forward and asked, “Do you know why your husband was at the events center last week?”

“Yeah. To killyouguys. But I only know that because the police told me. That lazy idiot didn’t tell me shit.”

Liam took note of her breathing and her heart rate, watching for any signs of a lie. She was telling the truth. She didn’t know anything.

“Your husband retired from the Army a few years ago. Is that right?” Liam asked.

“Yep. Then he spent all day, every day in that goddamn office of his. I barely saw him.” She took a big drink. “Go have a look if it will get you out of here faster. They took his computer but left everything else.”

Liam frowned. Everything else?

The woman started moving before they answered. Callum and Liam followed. The place was a mess. There was trash everywhere—particularly bottles of alcohol, some empty, some full.

She stopped at a door but before opening it, turned to face them. “I never went in here because he kept it locked. I didn’t really care what that no-good husband of mine was up to. I only saw the room when the police broke the lock. Happy exploring.” She turned and walked away.

Liam stepped in first and narrowed his eyes. The room was dark, but his enhanced vision allowed him to see every goddamn thing.

There was an empty desk against the back wall, but that wasn’t what had Liam’s muscles tightening. Photos were plastered on the wall behind the desk. Photos of his team. Walking down the streets in Cradle Mountain. In the coffee shop. There were also photos of the Marble Protection men in Texas.

What the fuck? How long had these assholes been watching them?

He stepped forward, skimming the newspaper articles that were also pinned to the wall. Articles that had come out when the world first learned about the project. It was like this guy had collected every goddamn story that had ever been written about them. He’d even gone so far as to highlight and underline information.

Unparalleled speed.

Night vision.

Unbelievable strength.

The ultimate soldier.

“Jesus,” Callum cursed. “All this time, these people have been watching us.”

“Not just watching. Studying.” Liam cataloged every detail of the room—until he stopped on a small scrap of paper sticking out from under the desk. He lowered to his haunches and pulled it out. A date, time, and location…all for the night of the engagement party. “And planning to end us.”

Callum’s eyes narrowed as he read the notes over Liam’s shoulder. “Hawk.”

Yeah, Liam had seen that too. One sentence at the bottom of the scrap of paper.

Hawk to provide details.

Callum met Liam’s gaze. “So, who’s Hawk?”
