Her breath caught in her throat. That sounded like a date. And yes, she liked him, and she wasn’t opposed to dating. But Liam was…

Well, he was everything she’d left behind in Misty Peak. Every bit as protective as her brothers.

“I’m not sure,” she finally said honestly. She opened her mouth to give him a reason but stopped. What could she say? Sorry, you’re too protective? Would she give him her entire life story about being the only girl in a military family? Explain her deep desire to live on her own terms for the first time in her life, without anyone watching over her shoulder?

“I see,” he finally said.

There was another small pause, and she wanted to squirm.

“What if I said it was just as friends? Me showing you around Cradle Mountain?”

Her fingers clutched the steering wheel. “Just as friends?”

“Yep.”

She wet her lips. She should say no. Heck, a voice in her head screamed the word at her. She wasn’t at all sure she could be “just friends” with this man. But…a night with someone who’d been so kind? Who made her skin tingle with a single touch?

“Okay.”

“Great. I’ll pick you up at six?”

“Sounds good.”

The second she hung up, she touched her forehead to the wheel in disbelief that she’d actually said yes. But was thereanywoman who would have been able to say no to a man like Liam? He was all power and sex.

With a groan, she pulled the car onto the road. Even though she was shocked, she was also excited. So unbelievably excited.

Nerves were still skittering down her spine when she stopped at the light and glanced in the rearview mirror.

She frowned at the car behind her. A Honda.

It was the guy who’d been looking at her in the parking lot.

It was probably nothing…but then why did something hard and uncomfortable lodge in her stomach?

When the light turned green, she moved forward, but instead of continuing to her condo, she took the first left. Her heart rate picked up when the car followed.

It was a good distance behind her. Was he actually following, or just heading in a similar direction?

She took the next right, her gaze barely on the road in front of her, panic surging in her chest. When the car didn’t show up in her rearview, she blew out a long breath, muscles relaxing.

Jesus Christ. What was wrong with her? Ofcoursethey weren’t following her. One night caught in the middle of a shootout, and suddenly she thought every man who looked in her direction was out to get her.

When she finally pulled into the condo’s parking lot, she inspected the area, and nope—no car had followed. She ran her hands over her face. It was official. She was losing her mind.

CHAPTER7

Liam knocked on the door of the condo. His gaze moved up and down the building exterior, hating that she was on the bottom floor. From a safety perspective, it wasn’t ideal.

Shuffling noises sounded from inside the apartment, then the door opened.

His chest constricted. Nylah’s hair was down again, flowing over her shoulders like a river in what was his new favorite style. She wore a high-waisted floral skirt with a long-sleeved black top, the fabric pulling tight against her ample chest.

Beautiful. So damn beautiful, he wondered how he was supposed to take his eyes off her.

He stepped forward, needing to be closer. Needing to touch her. “You look gorgeous.”

The smile that stretched across her lips was soft and slow. “You look good too.” Her gaze brushed over his chest. He loved the woman’s eyes on him. “I like a man in white.”
