When they didn’t stop at the entrance, Liam growled, “Who’s here?”
“The militia who are loyal to me, of course. I messaged them when I arrived, in case I needed backup.”
Fuck.
Suddenly, Nylah threw her head forward, simultaneously launching a fist back into Violet’s nose, causing her grip to slip just enough…
The second Nylah dropped, Liam shot Violet in the stomach. Before she hit the floor, he was running forward and grabbing both Nylah and the pistol, pulling her behind the train. He heard her heart racing as he pushed Violet’s gun into her hand.
“Stay down. If anyone gets past me, shoot.”
She gave a quick nod but grabbed him before he could rise. “Be careful.”
“Always.”
The footsteps rushed into their gallery. Liam swung his weapon around the side of the train and fired, getting the first three guys in the head.
The others stopped and took cover behind the wall. Three more men.
The silence only lasted for a second before bullets began to pepper the train. They were moving forward.
Fuck! He couldn’t let them get close to Nylah.
The second the first asshole came into view, Liam grabbed his arm and twisted, hearing the pop of his shoulder detaching from its socket before tugging him into his body and shooting him in the head. Liam quickly followed it up with a bullet to asshole number two when he came around the corner.
When he heard a gasp from Nylah, he spun around to see asshole number three stepping around the train. Before he could shoot, Nylah put a round in his leg.
Liam dropped the man in his arms and shot Nylah’s guy in the head.
Then there was silence, broken only by Nylah’s heaving breaths and her racing heart.
He dropped to her side and cupped her cheek in his hand. “Are you okay?”
She nodded, her gaze moving over him. “Yes.” She scanned his torso. His legs. When she looked back up, there were tears in her eyes. “You’re alive! When I felt the ground shake, I knew it was the Blue Halo building. I was so scared for you!”
Her voice cracked on the last word, and he tugged her into his chest, holding her so tightly, he barely gave her space to move. “I’m here. We’re both here.”
She dug her face into his chest.
That’s when he heard it…the rustle of movement on the other side of the train, followed by more footsteps moving through the museum.
God, would these assholes just die?
He pushed Nylah down once again, pressing a finger to his lips. When he stepped around the train it was to see Violet standing, one hand to the bullet wound on her stomach, the other holding a gun dropped by one of her men.
“I’m going…to kill you.” She coughed, the sound wet in her throat.
Liam was about to pull the trigger when a new voice rang out.
“Violet!”
The woman gasped and turned to look at Steve, who was standing in the entrance to the gallery.
“Dad?”
Liam’s blood ran cold.Dad?Steve was Violet’s fuckingfather?
“You need to put the gun down, Violet. Now.”
