Liam nodded. They talked details for another ten minutes, figuring out the basics of what would be in the response email. When Liam heard movement in the other room, he stood. “Keep us updated and let us know if there’s anything more we can do.”

Callum nodded. “Will do.”

When Liam walked into the living room, it was to see the women on their feet and moving toward the door. Nylah brought Eleanor into a hug, then Courtney did the same. When Courtney pulled back, she kept her hands on the woman’s shoulders. “Remember, if it’s too much for you, you don’t need to come help at the shop.”

Eleanor shook her head. “No. I do. I need to keep busy and keep my mind off what happened, otherwise it’ll just swamp me. A girls’ night will be good for me.”

“Well, girls’ night plus Jason,” Courtney said.

Eleanor aimed a small smile toward the guys before turning to the door.

Liam stepped forward. “I’m sorry about Carlson.”

Jason nodded. “Me too.”

Tears began to build in Eleanor’s eyes, but she blinked them away. “Thank you. If there’s anything I can do to help figure out what happened that night, please let me know.”

The second she was gone, Nylah went to Liam and laid her head on his shoulder. “I ache for her.”

He slid an arm around her waist, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. “Me too.”

“She didn’t know anything, unfortunately. She and Carlson went out for lunch, watched a movie together, then he went to the bar with his high school friends. She gave us the names of those friends and everyone they interacted with during the day, so you guys can talk to them. Also the name of the restaurant they went to, and the time they were there.”

Courtney handed a piece of paper to Jason. “Here’s all the information. How’d the meeting with Callum go?”

“They reached out to him.”

Courtney’s eyes widened.

“Really?” Nylah gasped. “So he’s in? Do you think they’ll actually tell him about their plans before anything happens?”

Liam shifted some hair from her face. “They’re asking for more information first. But, if that goes well, then hopefully.”

Her face fell a little.

“But we’ll get there,” he added. “If they’re reaching out, it means they’re still recruiting, so there’s time to stop whatever they’re working toward before it happens.”

Nylah nodded but didn’t seem convinced. He looked up at Jason and Courtney. “Thanks for today. We’ll see you later.”

They nodded, and Liam led Nylah out of the apartment. When she reached for the handle of his car door, he tugged her into his arms. “Hey. It’s gonna be okay.”

Just days ago, she’d told her brother the same thing. Now…

“You don’t know that. A few days ago, Carlson just stepped out of a bar and was shot. Somehow this guy knew where he’d be and that he had vital information. It’s like he has ears and eyes everywhere. It’s all so dangerous.”

“We’redangerous. And we’re also the best. We willnotlet them win this.”

That was a fucking vow.

She swallowed. “I want to believe you—”

“Then do. Trust me.”

She sighed and leaned her head against his chest. “Okay, Liam. I trust you.”

Those words…they sank deep inside his chest, lifting some of the heaviness of the past few weeks.

He wrapped his arms around her and held her close, letting the simple touch be enough to make him feel almost at peace.
