Nylah grazed her hand down his arm, her fingers slipping through his before they followed Tyler down the hall.

When they stepped into the conference room, Callum had his phone in hand, the call on speaker.

“Callum.”

A vein in Liam’s temple throbbed at the sound of Steve’s voice.

“What happened back there?” Callum asked, voice a thin line.

“I told you, I had an emergency with one of my guys. Sorry I ended the call so abruptly. Have you sent the sketch?”

Liam wasn’t sure if he believed the guy. And since it was a phone conversation, there was no way for him or his team to detect a truth or a lie.

“We’ll send it through now,” Callum said slowly. “You’ll run it through the system? Figure out if it can lead to an identification?”

“Yes. I’m going to do everything I can to assist your team on this, Callum. I promise.”

Liam wanted to believe him. Hesoundedlike he was telling the truth.

God, Liam’s head was a mess.

The only thing that kept him calm was Nylah’s touch. The way the pad of her thumb stroked over the back of his hand. It was what he had to focus on to stay whole.

Nylah lookedat Liam from beneath her lashes.

A couple of days had passed since they’d sent the sketch to Steve. So far, he hadn’t been able to identify the man…but Liam and his team weren’t sure they believed him.

Liam was incredibly angry about no longer feeling like he could trust Steve. They all were. He tried to hide it from her—smiles when she looked at him, gentle touches—but she felt his rage. It bounced off him hot and heavy, even now, as they walked to The Grind to check on the progress of the new windows.

God, her heart bled for him. For his entire team. They deserved answers.

“You okay?” she finally asked as they crossed the road.

There was a short pause. “Yeah. I’m okay, Ny.”

She frowned, not believing him for a second.

“One good thing to come out of the last few days,” Liam added. “There’ve been no recent attacks.”

It was true. And in the calm, she could almost forget she’d been a target at all.

She forced a smile to her face. “You’re right. Maybe you might not have to worry about me anymore.”

His fingers tightened around hers. “I’ll always worry.”

And she’d always worry about him. It seemed that was how love worked.

She ran her thumb over the back of his hand. As they neared the coffee shop, Nylah saw the hustle of contractors moving around. Courtney was talking to a couple of them, with Jason close beside her.

When Courtney saw them, she stepped up to Nylah and tugged her into a hug. It was a warm, all-encompassing hug, and Nylah was used to them by now. This woman wasn’t just a boss. She’d become a good friend.

Courtney pulled back, but her hands remained on Nylah’s upper arms. “I haven’t seen you for a few days. How are you doing?”

“Really good.”

She gave a slow nod, almost like she was considering whether to believe her or not. Until finally, she gave a small smile. “Good.” She looked up at Liam, and the same concern skittered in her eyes. “And how areyou?”
