Blake’s family was his whole world. He’d gone through hell when he and Willow were separated and he was forced to be a part-time father. Things were different now, and his friend was finally happy again.
“They’re good.” A pained expression came over Blake’s face. “Willow’s been keeping Mila home from school for her safety. But we’re both worried.”
“Nothing’s gonna happen to them.”
A part of him knew he couldn’t guarantee that. But the other part, the part desperate to keep his people safe, knew that anyone who tried to hurt their loved ones would have to go through Liam’s team, and that would be a wall that wouldn’t break easily.
“Thanks. Nylah’s really doing okay?”
“She’s a fighter, man. If there was ever a woman who I felt was made for me, it’s her.”
One side of Blake’s mouth lifted. “Then hold on to her. Because that only ever comes once in a lifetime.”
“I know.” He tapped the doorframe. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
He headed out of the office, saying a quick goodbye to Cassie and Aidan, who were talking in the reception area. Another couple who’d gone through hell to find each other again.
As he trotted down the stairs, he sent a quick message to Nylah.
Liam: Just heading to the coffee shop now. Be there in a couple minutes.
Nylah: Good. Because I miss you. See you soon.
His heart clenched. He’d started to realize that his heart moved to an entirely different rhythm when it came to Nylah. Faster. And so out of sync to what he was used to.
He slid behind the wheel of his car and drove toward The Grind. He could have walked, but being off the sidewalk and not out in the open felt safer. One day soon, he’d make sure he could hold his woman’s hand and go anywhere without having to look over their shoulders.
The coffee shop had just come into view when he saw an arm stretch out the window from the car in front of him, gun in hand.
Bullets hit the glass, smashing it right before his eyes.
Three shots fired, then the vehicle took off.
Black rage spiked though Liam’s veins. He pressed on the gas and took off after the asshole.
CHAPTER21
The engine roared, Liam’s foot almost to the floor as he drove. He pressed a button on the steering wheel, and the phone only rang once before Jason picked up.
“Tell me she’s okay,” Liam growled as he swung the car around a corner, never letting the shooter out of his sight. If his friend said no, if he said Nylah was injured, Liam would turn the car around and go to her. Losing this asshole would hurt, but he couldn’tnotgo to Nylah if she wasn’t okay. “Tell meeveryone’sokay.”
“Cody covered Nylah and I covered Courtney. No one got hurt, bar a couple grazes from dropping to the ground and the glass.”
The air rushed from Liam’s chest, the panic and fear shifting over to his fury, fueling it. “Good. I’m behind the asshole now. He’s in a Ram pickup. Get the guys to track the GPS on my phone to find my location and ask Callum to run these plates.” He rattled off the numbers in front of him.
“Got it. Someone will be there soon.”
“Before you go, could you tell who he was shooting at? You or her?”
There was a small pause. “Definitely her.”
Fuck. He pushed the car to move faster. “Stick close to Nylah for me.”
“I’m not leaving her side.”
Another rush of air moved through his lungs. He wanted to call Nylah. Hear her voice. Know firsthand that she was okay. Breathing. Safe. But he trusted Jason. And right now, he needed to put everything he had into catching this guy so he didn’t hurt anyone else or go after Nylah again.
When the shooter’s car swerved into oncoming traffic to pass someone, he almost collided with another vehicle. Liam waited for the Ford to pass and stayed on the guy’s ass. The shooter took a hard right, and Liam followed, tires squealing against asphalt. He sped up again. His GT was faster than the guy’s pickup. He closed the distance so there wasn’t even the length of a car space between them.
