She grinned. “Time will tell. It’s got pretty big shoes to fill.”
“It does. Okay. I’ll leave you to it, then. Maybe talk to you in a week. Remember to watch your back, okay?”
“Always. Love you, Kayden.”
“Love you too.”
The second the call ended, she pushed her phone into her pocket and wrapped both hands around the railing. Then she closed her eyes and let the dry air fill her lungs. The air of a new town.
She was just opening her eyes again when the door opened behind her.
CHAPTER2
Liam looked around the busy ballroom. People were scattered throughout every inch of space, drinking, talking, laughing. Most were locals from here in Cradle Mountain, with his team woven throughout the crowd.
Seven other men with whom he’d been through the hell of Project Arma. Men he now considered brothers.
Each of them had found their person—a woman they loved and wanted to spend their life with. And fuck, he was happy for them. They deserved love. Hell, they deserved to be happy for the rest of their goddamn lives after dedicating so many years to the military, only to be held hostage for years.
His gaze caught on Eden and Bodie, two of the eight men from Marble Falls, Texas. Their entire team was here tonight too. The men who’d saved Liam andhisteam. Men Liam would be indebted to for life. It felt good to have everyone together for the first time in so long.
His gut tightened when Nylah came into view. He’d barely been able to stop staring at the woman all night. Her thick auburn hair was pulled up into a tight ponytail, and those eyes…beautiful ice-blues. God, she was gorgeous.
“Someone caught your eye?”
Liam shifted his gaze to Callum. “Maybe.”
His friend grinned. “Didn’t I see you talking to her earlier today while we were setting up?”
“Yeah, she bumped into my back and some glasses broke. She cut her finger.” He could still feel her smooth skin beneath his fingertips as he’d lifted her hand to inspect the cut.
So damn soft.
“So you got to play doctor,” Callum said, humor in his voice.
What hegotwas an excuse to touch her. An extra few minutes to talk to her. “I did. Wasn’t terrible.”
“What’s her name?”
“Nylah.”
“You should go over to her. Talk for a bit.”
Liam frowned. “I said hello, and she’s working.”
“So, go grab a meatball. Maybe ask for her number while you’re there.”
“Whose number are we asking for?”
Liam turned his head at the new voice. Wyatt, from Marble Protection, came to stand beside them. He did a lot of the tech stuff for his company back in Texas and helped out Blue Halo on occasion.
“Nylah,” Callum said before Liam could tell his friend to shut the hell up. “That beautiful woman with the auburn hair who’s talking to your team.”
Wyatt searched for her, then he nodded. “I agree. You should get her number.”
“Is that what you did with Quinn?” Liam asked with a raised brow. “Just asked for her number when you didn’t even know her?”
“Hell no.” Wyatt laughed. “She made me work for it. She moved in across the hall, and I told myself to stay the hell away because she’s the sister of a teammate. But…staying away proved to be impossible.”
