Nylah smiled at them. “I’d be happy to keep everyone fed. I believe there are some sweet and tangy meatballs in the kitchen that I can bring out next.”
There was a ravenous groan, but she wasn’t sure if it came from Evie or Samantha or both.
Sage nodded. “Bring them. All of them.”
Nylah laughed and nodded before moving away.
They were so friendly. For some reason, she’d expected the people who’d been part of Project Arma to be arrogant. Or maybe standoffish and closed off. They’d basically become celebrities for what they were now capable of—incredible strength and speed, quick healing and the ability to hear things they shouldn’t. All because of an unsanctioned military experiment they hadn’t even known they were part of.
She visited several more groups before returning to the kitchen. Her phone vibrated in her back pocket as she stepped through the doors.
Was that Cody again? Or was it Kayden this time? Hell, it could even be Eastern. He’d just announced to his siblings that he was leaving the military and moving home to spend more time with his daughter.
She entered the kitchen and lowered her tray to the nearest counter, then checked her phone.
Eastern.
She canceled the call and sent a quick text.
Nylah: Sorry, I can’t talk right now. Working. Chat later.
Quickly, she slipped her phone back into her pocket, lifted the tray of meatballs, and headed back into the ballroom. Something pulled her attention to the right, and she almost stumbled at the sight of Liam. He was standing with a small group of guys—but his gaze was on her. It was hot and intense and so fixated, her breathing just…stopped. It was like her lungs couldn’t get air.
She forced her eyes away, beelining for Lexie’s group.
Over the next hour, she continually moved around the ballroom. Time passed quickly, and whenever she grabbed a new tray, the food just seemed to vanish.
She was dropping off her tray for what felt like the tenth time when her phone vibrated with another incoming call. Kayden this time.
Jesus Christ, she was going to kill her brothers! All of them. Slow. Painful. Deaths.
She wasn’t supposed to take a break, but if she ignored her older brother’s call for too long, he’d just call nonstop. This would have to be quick.
She slipped out of the back French doors onto a wide deck, cold air brushing over her face, then, finally, answered the call. “Hi, Kayden.”
“Hey, Ny. I just wanted to check in.”
She wrapped her fingers around the railing and scanned the parking lot. “Thank you. I appreciate that. I’m working, though. Plus, I’ve already received a call from both Cody and Eastern tonight.”
Okay, those words probably came out a bit short, but God, she hadn’t been here for half a week and there hadn’t been a night without her brothers contacting her. They worried because it was her first time away from Misty Peak, but she needed space.
There was a heavy pause before he finally said, “Too much?”
Despite everything, the corners of her lips lifted. “Yeah, Kayden. Too much. I love all of you, but I need some time away. Some space to breathe on my own.”
He blew out a breath over the line. “We’re suffocating you.”
“Maybe, but…it’s a loving suffocation.”
He gave a small chuckle. “I get it. I’ll let the others know to back off.”
Relief washed over her like a blast of fresh air. She hadn’t realized how much she needed to hear that until her brother said it. “Thank you.”
“Cradle Mountain treating you well?”
She ran her fingers over the railing. “Well, I’ve only been here a couple of days, but so far it’s great.”
“Not as great as Misty Peak, though.”
