Wait, what? “No. I’m not his.” Although, she blushed furiously, and the fine hairs on her arms stood on end at being described that way.
One side of Jason’s mouth lifted, like he knew something she didn’t. “It’s nice to meet you.”
“You too.” She turned to Courtney. “Thank you so much for the job, and I’ll see you this Saturday. Or earlier if I stop in for coffee.”
“Really looking forward to having you work here, Nylah.”
When she stepped onto the street, Nylah wanted to fist pump the air. Yes! A new job already. God, she was actually doing it—living on her own terms in a new place. And it felt good.
She tugged out her phone as she walked toward her car.
Nylah: Guess who got a job with consistent hours?
Paisley: Oh my God…tell me everything.
Nylah: It’s just serving coffee at the local café, but I’m excited.
Paisley: You should be. That’s amazing, Ny!!
Yeah, it was. She was typing a response when another message came through. The name had her foot catching on the pavement. She barely caught herself.
Liam: Hey, beautiful. How’d it go with Courtney?
Okay, not just seeing Liam’s name. The endearment. The way he checked up on her.
Her belly tingled.
Nylah: Good. I start this weekend.
Liam: Will your knee be good enough by then?
Nylah: Yes. It’s almost feeling okay today, actually.
The three dots came up, then disappeared.
What were you about to write, Liam?
She was sliding into the car when someone across the parking lot caught her attention. A man who was staring straight at her.
The second her gaze collided with his, he turned away and got into a Honda.
Had he been watching her?
Her phone pinged again.
Liam: If you need to start a bit later, I’m sure she won’t mind.
Nylah: You worry too much.
Liam: No such thing.
As she started the car, her phone rang. Her heart skittered in her chest. He was calling her now? “Hey.”
“It’s good to hear your voice, Ny.”
A shudder rolled down her spine at Liam’s deep, raspy tone.
“So, I was wondering,” he started slowly, “if you’d let me take you out tonight?”
