Hell, even once was too much.
“Oh yeah. That happens a lot in this town. Not because it’s unsafe, but because trouble seems to find a lot of us.” Her features darkened. “None of us were expecting what happened at Cassie and Aidan’s engagement party, though. I’m sorry you got caught up in it.”
“You don’t need to apologize. Everyone suffered. I just hope they make sure anyone who was involved and not there that night is arrested.”
“Me too. I’m a bit nervous because the attack was very well organized…and the group could be a lot larger than we think.”
Dread churned in her belly at the idea of Liam still being in danger. “The Blue Halo guys can take care of themselves though, right?” It was like she needed the confirmation. She knew they were badass, but they weren’t bulletproof.
“Of course.”
But even as Courtney said it, there was a flicker of worry in the woman’s eyes.
Courtney clapped her hands. “Okay, next.”
Nylah followed her around the shop as she explained how everything worked. She showed Nylah how to use the coffee machine, something she’d definitely need a refresher on once or twice. She also introduced her to the brunette waitress, Violet, who seemed lovely.
Courtney made her a coffee, which tasted as good as it smelled, and also let her taste test a couple of the foods.
When they were done, Courtney asked, “So, what do you think? Have I scared you off?”
“Nope. You’ve just made me want to start sooner.”
Courtney laughed. “Trust me, I’d have you start today if it weren’t for your knee.”
Nylah opened her mouth to say that she was fine, but Courtney cut her off.
“Nope. Don’t tell me you’re fine. I want you to put your leg up and rest, then we can start working together this weekend and become best friends.”
Nylah’s smile softened. “That sounds wonderful.” Especially the ‘friends’ part. Without Paisley here, her friend list was literally one person—Liam. And technically, he wasn’t even a friend.
“Great.” Courtney turned her attention toward the door as it opened, the smile across her face widening.
Nylah followed her gaze to see two of the Blue Halo men stepping inside. Courtney rounded the counter and stepped right into one of the men’s arms. The embrace was intimate and protective. Loving. And it made Nylah want to sigh.
The second guy frowned as he glanced at her. “Nylah, right?”
She nodded, not sure how the man knew her name.
His eyes darkened, a new intensity seeping into his features. “You got my family out of that party the other night.”
Her brows rose. “Mila is—”
“My daughter. And Willow’s my wife. Thank you. It’s a debt I’ll owe forever.”
She shook her head. “No, anyone in my position would have done the same thing.”
“Not true. A lot of people would have covered their own asses and gotten themselves out of there.”
She swallowed, the depth of emotion in the man’s eyes swirling inside her like a storm. “I’m glad they’re okay.”
His dipped his chin.
Courtney cleared her throat. “Jason, have you met my newest employee?”
Nylah swung her attention toward the other tall guy.
Jason grinned. “Nylah! Liam’s woman, right?”
