She blinked rapidly. “I’m not sure if this is all a dream or not.”
“Let me make it real for you.” I scooped her off the bed, loving the way she laughed at the unexpected move. This woman loved surprises and adventure. I could give her that, to a point. I could show her every inch of these mountains.
Hannah needed more. If I truly cared for her, I’d let her go. I’d let her claim her true mate, and I’d stay in the shadows, making sure she was safe.
Mine.
But I wanted to keep her for myself. I needed to make this real for me, for the fleeting moments that she’d be in my life.
What did the human women that I’d protected as a contestant onThe Mating Gamewant? I’d stayed removed from the ladies on the show, keeping dangerous shifters at bay. So I had no idea what they wanted, or if Hannah was anything like them. I thought maybe I should put her down, since modern women seemed to like to do things for themselves, but the way Hannah snuggled against my body said otherwise.
I stopped in front of the mirror, taking a moment to capture this memory. So different than the last time we were here, with her tits bouncing up and down, her head thrown back in ecstasy. But I loved seeing her colorful body curled against my chest just as much.
No one had been in the rest of my caverns since Tanyth left this realm. Hannah picked her head up as I carried her down the hallway and to the steps that brought us to the lower level.
“Whoa. This is a castle.”
“I’ve never seen a castle, so you’ll have to tell me about it.” From her tone, I imagined it was a good thing.
“Oh, it’s…” she laughed. “I want to describe it as a castle. Okay, so a castle is a magical place where kings and queens live. They’re usually huge and regal and have a hint of mystery. This place is huge. Check. And mystery? I have so many questions.”
“Like what?” Instinct made me bring her to what had been Tanyth’s favorite part of the caverns—the natural bath formed by the hot springs under the mountain.
Her face lit up when she saw them, and I motioned for her to get into the bath.
“This is so good.” She closed her eyes as she sunk into the bubbling water and sighed. She only let herself indulge in the feeling for a moment.
I had to find a way to keep her.
“Did you build this yourself?” she asked.
“I did.” I swelled with pride.
“Wow.” She leaned forward on the ledge of the tub. Steam rose from the water, making me want to take her all over again. Her body wasn’t ready for that. “Tell me all about it.”
I slipped into the water beside her and reached for the honeyberry salve. “Come closer so I can wash you.”
She nestled herself onto my lap with those glorious breasts bobbing at the surface of the water. The little rings in her nipples glistened in the low light of the room.
“That feels so good,” she moaned.
“I like to make you feel good.”
“You’re very good at it.” She bounced on my thigh. “Tell me more about how you built this place. It’s really impressive. How much of the mountain does it take up?”
“All of it.” I nodded when she gaped. “At the time we built it, there was a thriving village at the base of the mountain. My brother was here…” I wasn’t sure how much I should tell her about him. An earlier contestant onThe Mating Gamehad been digging up information on the history of the area, and it was only a matter of time before his story was told. There was no way to change history, we could only learn from it. “His family. My mate.”
“Did you have kids?” Hannah asked.
I shook my head and began massaging the salve into her skin, loving the ways the bubbles took on a hint of color from her tattoos. “We thought we would, but Tanyth never got pregnant. I told her it was okay because we’d have each other forever.” There was a sharp pain in my chest along the barely healed lines of my broken heart. “But maybe it’s better that we didn’t, because—”
Hannah put her hands on my cheeks.
“I didn’t mean to bring up anything painful for you.” She brushed her lips against the bridge of my nose. I would crave that gentle touch when she left. “It’s just…I can tell you did this a long time ago. I mean, it’s lit by candlelight. It’s obvious you put so much love into this. It seems crazy to ask if you have a job, but if you could do this, you’re a very skilled builder.”
“I didn’t have a job like humans do. What is your job, outside ofThe Mating Game?”
“I used to work for a record company. And—” she screamed.
