Putting one report aside, he paused for a moment to stretch his neck, then picked up the next and continued reading. It was only when a gentle knock sounded on the frosted glass door that separated his office from the other executive suites that he stopped and looked up. Realising he’d gotten lost in his work, he checked the time and scowled.

“Come,” he barked, more sharply than he’d intended.

The door swung open. “Sorry to interrupt you, Jack, but your…wifeis here to see you.”

He didn’t miss the way his assistant’s mouth twisted or how her voice dripped with disdain when she uttered the wordwife. The sour expression on her face didn’t suit the fastidiously professional woman either.

Bethany had worked for Jack for six years and knew his pending divorce was not an amicable one. Being the consummate professional she was, she kept her thoughts on her boss’s private life to herself, but when she did see fit to express an opinion on the subject, it was brief and to the point. The woman could write a book about the efficiency of a well-timed eyeroll, and Jack almost smiled at the change his ex could affect in even the most pleasant of people.

“Did she tell you to call her that?”

She pursed her lips and nodded sharply. “She did.”

Jack looked at his watch again. Lisa was more than two hours late. The urge to make her wait while he finished going over the stack of reports warred with his need to make her disappear from his life as soon as humanly possible. She’d dragged their separation out for long enough, and he was beyond sick of it.

It was time to end it once and for all.

Shifting the stack of work documents into the desk drawer, he pulled out the shiny new divorce agreement he’d had his solicitor draw up on New Year’s Day. To say the man had been unimpressed by Jack’s demands was an understatement, but he’d gotten the job done and been well compensated for his efforts.

Jack placed the papers front and centre on his desk. He even laid out his best fountain pen for the occasion.

“Show her in,” he said and leaned back in his chair.

Bethany nodded and disappeared, and the next time the door opened, Lisa was standing there, looking as primped and picture-perfect as she always did.

Jack didn’t bother to stand and greet her. He no longer felt the need to be polite to the woman. All he wanted was for her to sign the papers and go.

And this time he wasn’t taking no for an answer.

“Jack, darling,” she said, her lips curled in a tight smile. “I was summoned?”

Like the demon she is.

“Have a seat,” Jack said, keeping his tone short as he indicated the chair in front of his desk.

Lisa folded her curvy little frame into the leather chair and crossed her legs. She had always had a lovely figure, and a pretty face to match. Unfortunately, she was also the personification of all that glitters not being gold. Her sexy façade hid a wealth of faults, the most prominent being greed, entitlement, and selfishness.

He’d married her for all the wrong reasons, he knew that, but it had still shocked him to his core to discover how callous, how cruel she truly was. But the facts had been hard to argue with. She’d used him, lied to him, cheated on him.

And worse.

The proof of her treachery had broken his heart, and until a few days ago, he’d thought it could never be healed. But then he’d met Sophie Bennett and his whole world had turned on its head.

He’d smiled again. Felthappyagain. Hopeful.

I will get her back.

“I have a full schedule and you’re late, so I’ll keep this brief. Sign the papers, Lisa. No more of your games. This ends right here, right now.”

Her eyes narrowed slightly, and her tight smile spread into something more sinister. “Are you really so eager to get rid of me, Jack?”

He didn’t flinch. “Yes.”

“Ouch,” she said, pretending to pout. “Words hurt, Jonathon.”

Jack simply stared at his ex, keeping his expression carefully neutral. “Sign the papers, Lisa.”

“Now, hang on a moment.” She leaned forward in her seat, drawing his gaze to her ample cleavage. That little movement combined with the glint of challenge in her eyes used to make him want her. Used to drive him crazy with a need to drag her over his knees and make her submit. But that was a long time ago.
