A few days passed, and I finally got over my anxiety. I never saw Liam again, nor did I notice him stalking me. But that didn't mean I would let my guard down.

I was extra careful with my movements. Lucas noticed this as well and made sure that I only went somewhere with him. Spending more time with him made me feel safe. He didn't try to find out what happened in my past, keeping to his world of waiting until I was already.

I wanted to tell him, but I was afraid of what he would think. I also noticed that his relationship with his father was heading downhill.

James always seemed eager to annoy his son. Lucas was always ready to retaliate. Kate was slowly getting better, or so it seemed. We weren't really on speaking terms ever since I suggested she leave. But I was still worried for her.

After receiving my pay, I wanted to send some to my aunt, so I called her. I was shocked by how weak she sounded when she answered the phone. I had been checking in on her just to make sure she was okay. All she would complain about was minor pains but nothing severe.

But this time, she said she had been unable to do anything herself.

"When did it start, and why didn't you tell me?" I asked.

"It started yesterday, and, honestly, I thought I'd do better this morning, but I've been stuck in bed," she replied. "My neighbor had to help me out with breakfast, but he's left for work now."

"I'm coming back now," I said.

"You don't have to worry about me. I'll be fine," she insisted. "Just focus on your work; maybe you can swing by the weekend."

"You're not going to tell me what to do," I warned and frowned. "just stay put, and I'll be there."

"Okay." She knew better than to argue with me.

I hung up and let out a sigh.

"Is something wrong?" Kate asked. "Is Auntie okay?"

When the call happened, I was in the living room, so she had overheard some parts.

"She's not able to take care of herself," I replied. "I'm going back to Chicago."

"When will you be back?" she asked.

"Aren't you coming with me?" I raised a brow.

"No, I…" She stared down at the ring on her finger.

I forgot about her responsibilities.

"I know it's all right," I said.

"I can pay for the trip," she offered.

"What trip?" Lucas asked as he made his way to the living room.

He was dressed sharply in a brilliant ash tuxedo with a black dress shirt and turtle-shade glasses. He had a mini travelling bag by his side.

"Oh, thank goodness," I sighed. "You're going to Chicago, right?"

"Yeah, to meet with my friends," he replied. "Is something wrong?"

"My aunt isn't feeling so great, and I want to check in on her," I explained.

"Oh, So the both of you want to leave?" he asked.

"No, just me," I answered.

Kate looked like she had something to say but didn't.
