It was going to be a long night.

Chapter twenty-eight

The Fall

The best doctors in Richmond and outside were gathered around Sarah's bed. Pulmonary hypertension wasn't easy to treat and, Lord knows, I had a hard time doing it. I don't even want to take credit for the entire process because Sarah's willpower handled most of the healing. Still, it was a miracle.

“Please tell me you documented the entire process,” Dr. Cunningham, a leading surgeon, asked.

“The aim was actually to control the rate at which the sickness was developing,” I explained. “To tell you the truth, it was simple and I had no idea that it would work.”

“So, you just went by the book?” he asked.

“Oh, maybe the secret lies within her body,” Dr. Maria Wills said as she touched Sarah's arm. “You mentioned the lady only broke down at the hospital after fighting for so long?”

“Yes,” I answered.

“Maybe, I should collect her blood samples,” Dr. Wills murmured.

“You lot are treating me like a lab animal,” Sara complained.

“My apologies, you just survived something that isn't easy to survive,” Dr. Cunningham remarked. “So, we're all lost for words.”

“You are one fantastic woman,” Dr Wills praised. “I wish I could study you all day.”

“At least buy me dinner first,” Sarah mocked in her usual manner.

“Don't you think the patient would want some alone time now?” Jane asked. “You science obsessed crazies.”

“She has a point. I'll talk to you later,” Dr. Cunningham uttered as he left the room with Dr. Wills.

I was left with Sarah.

“How are you feeling?” I asked.

“If I knew that having a lot of people stare at me and talk about me would feel this good, maybe I would have agreed to an orgy at least once in my life,” she replied, snickering.

“I'm asking how you feel after the procedure,” I said and rolled my eyes.

“Same thing,” she said. “You are pretty handsy, aren't you, doctor?”

“Don't make it sound weird, please,” I sighed.

She laughed and muttered, “You really are fun to tease.”

“The process was easier than I had expected,” she finally revealed, “but I guess that is your skill speaking.”

“Like I told the other doctors, you made the process easier,” I clarified. “Olivia can finally rest easy.”

“But she has to work for you for a very long time right?” she asked.

“That was the deal,” I confirmed.

“Thank you for taking care of her,” she said. “That girl has spent a lot of time taking care of me. I've always wondered if anyone would take care of her, especially with how she puts a lot of distance between herself and others.”

“But you seem like the kind of person she has finally warmed up to,” she continued. “Please don't let her leave.”
