“I see,” he sighed. “I allowed one of my staff to handle it. Maybe she made a mistake. You could have run it by her without coming to me directly.”
“Oh don't mind me, I just felt that the head should know,” I said with a smile. “So, when you see a change in the numbers you wouldn't be too surprised.”
“Oh, that actually makes sense, thank you so much,” he said.
As I excused myself and left his office, I was being followed.
“What exactly is your problem?” Joanne, the staff in charge of the pharmacy budget asked.
“Oh hi Joanne,” I greeted with a friendly smile. “Just thought I'd show Mr. Williams what the new budget was. You kind of made a mistake and looking at past records this is like the seventh time something like this had happened.”
“Just because you're the boss's favorite doesn't give you the right to do anything you want,” she snapped.
“This isn't about being a favorite, I'm just trying to make sure we all do our jobs properly,” I explained.
“Yeah easy for someone who just walked in here through a recommendation to say,” she sneered. “It must be nice using that perfect body of yours to get what you want without having to work for it. Then make the rest of us look like idiots so you can be called perfect by the head doctor or everyone else in charge.”
“I'm confused. What is it you're trying to say exactly?” I was viciously holding back my anger.
“You know exactly what I'm talking about,” she replied. “I'm not the one who sleeps at the boss's place, coming and leaving work together.”
I took a deep breath and relaxed. “Look, I understand your problems with me but I assure you it's not to make you look bad. If I wanted to make you look bad I would have told your boss that this wasn't the first ‘mistake’ you've made.”
I continued, “if Luc– I mean head doctor, actually finds out this mistake don't you think you would have lost your job a long time ago?”
“Just be careful that's all,” I concluded.
“Threatening me?” She arched a brow. “Is that what you're doing?”
“I don't have time for this,” I sighed and left her.
Working here through the process I got didn't mean it was going to be easy to get along with everyone. The older and more trusted staff enjoyed having me as an addition to the hospital. But some of them insisted that I was an ass kisser to Lucas.
I spent most of my time trying to prove that I was worthy of the position I was given. And yet no matter how hard I tried, some could never see that most of what I had achieved was through my hard work.
Lucas was right, I needed a break.

As instructed, I took the next day off. Kate and I didn't speak to each other. Well, I wanted to talk to her but I didn't just know how to initiate the conversation. Besides, James was guarding her like a dog. It annoyed me to say that she was yet to set any kind of boundary with him.
I decided to go shopping a bit. Thanks to the amount I was paid in salary, I was just about ready to get my own place and move out. I got an agent to house hunt for me, then went window shopping for some new items I would need.
I didn't have a lot of home appliances, and the cost of everything was going to be on a budget. Heck, I still needed to buy a mattress, a bed frame and a lot of other things. So window shopping was just my way of gauging the price of things. I noticed a couple working together and selecting things for their new home.
I thought that once I was done with my job and had saved up enough, I planned to get married. It didn't seem like it was going to be anytime soon as I wanted to find the right person first. The moment I mentionedthe right person, and the image of Lucas formed in my mind.
“Lucas?” I asked myself. “What makes him the right person?”
Let's see…
Very good with his hands in bed.
May be cold and quiet most of the time, but very good with children.
Is kind and patient.
Even when I act stubborn and try to push him away, he remains close to watch if I need help.
