“Was more or less the other way around,” Olivia mocked and smiled.

“So sickly sweet,” Isaac mooed. “As for me, I've yet to find that special someone. I called Mom today to tell her to send me a document I needed. At least it was something.”

With the kind of Mother we had, he wasn't joking when he said it at least meant something.

“There's this girl. She's sick. I met her today,” Gregory said. “I don't know how long she has left, but I want to do my best.”

“Easy with the heavy stuff,” Tabitha warned. “As doctors, we always want to do our best. But we should know when moments call for the power of God and not a power of our own.”

“Did you just preach to us?” Helena laughed. “Gregory is a sweet soul. He'll be fine. Olivia what's been going on with you?”

“Two things. One, pregnancy is a bitch,” she replied. “Second, it still feels weird to see all of you together without quarreling. I just hope it will continue. I want my daughter or son to have a good relationship with their uncles and aunts.”

Her words got through to them.

“Will try our best,” Gregory promised on behalf of the family.

“I've always wanted a niece or nephew,” Isaac added

“Hmph,” Helena smiled.

“If that's what you want,” Olivia said.

In a way, she had created unity among the siblings. It was my turn.

“Olivia, I have something to tell you,” I started to say.

“Hmm?” She raised a brow. I didn't even realize that she had started consuming a turkey leg. She wiped her mouth and muttered, “I'm sorry, what?”

“No it's…” I cleared my throat to stop the laughter. “I've never had a functional family.”

“We're right here,” Tabitha noted.

“I have never really thought about a family,” I continued, ignoring my sister, “but you are my peace and soon the mother of my child.”

“I know it's too late to say this now, but…” I paused and brought out the ring, “would you like to join the most dysfunctional family I know…and in the process be mine and mine alone?”

“Oh, my God…” She covered her face and started to chuckle. “You were about to propose, and I was stuffing my face. You should have said something.”

“Well, I'm saying it now,” I stammered. “The timing may be poor, but my intentions are real.”

“Then my response is positive,” she avowed. “I am going to be not only your mother, partner, and friend but your wife as well.”

My heart leapt in bounds as I put the ring on her finger. My siblings cheered and applauded as we kissed. It was the first time in forever that we were united. I felt like I had the ideal family…and it all started with a woman I had met at the bar.

As we got seated, trying to adjust to the new reality of husband and wife, there were other matters to discuss.

“So, what you're saying is that there's an organization after us?” Gregory asked.

“At least that's what I heard,” Olivia replied. “He was willing to tell me everything he knew because he assumed that I was going to die. Very convenient.”

“Indeed,” I agreed. “He was able to get the files; so, whatever or whoever he was working with, they were too close for comfort.”

“What does Mom have to say about all this? If the target is on us because of the files, shouldn't she be worried?” Tabitha asked.

We all expected her to know the answer. It was “no”.

“Right, I forgot,” she sighed. “The woman doesn't care about us.”
