‘Look on the bright side,’ he murmured, capturing her hand with his and planting a gentle kiss on her wrist, his dark eyes never leaving hers. ‘We still havethis.’
Kaya didn’t pretend to misunderstand. Her body agreed with every word of that. They might not havelove, he was saying, but they had sex.
It would have to do.
She would enjoy it—and what was ever perfect in life, when she thought about it?
She drew him towards her and felt liberated. He kissed her, a gentle, enquiring kiss, a kiss that still tiptoed around the decision she had made. She pulled him into her so that they toppled back, half-laughing, her mouth never leaving his.
No turning back.
They made love surrounded by the sea, the surf and the blue skies above, just the two of them here in this wonderful bubble. For her, it was wonderful, passionate, bitter-sweet love. She enjoyed him in the knowledge that this was all there could ever be and it was going to have to be enough.
‘What if someone comes?’ she whispered as he slowly tugged down the swimsuit top to expose her breasts. He grinned and propped himself up on his hands to stare down at her.
‘No chance. The island is very private, and if anyone approaches by boat we would hear from a distance away. But, trust me, that’s not going to happen. What’s going to happen, my darling, is this...’
Kaya melted into the tenderness of his love-making. He was the ultimate thoughtful lover, respectful of her pregnancy, even though she told him that there was no need to be. But secretly she adored that respect, adored the way he made her feel, as though she was the most delicate thing on the planet and to be protected at all costs, even when it came to over-frisky love-making.
He suckled on her breasts, cupped them in his hands and told her that he could already feel that they were fuller, riper, her nipples bigger and darker.
‘And more sensitive,’ Kaya murmured, lying back with shameless abandon as she urged him to suck harder until she was sure she could come just from the wet caress of his mouth on her nipples.
He stripped her and it was glorious, feeling the warm sun on her body and the soft sand between her toes when her feet slid away from the rug.
His erection, freed from the swimming trunks, told her all there was to know, that this man still very much wanted her, but she’d known that all along.
He parted her legs and the breath hitched in her throat as he played with her there, teasing her with his fingers, mouth and tongue, finding her clitoris and stimulating it until she was writhing with pleasure.
She begged him to stop, and begged him not to stop, which made him smile. She was open and ready for him when at last he thrust into her, long and deep, and moving with gentle, persistent rhythm.
He pushed a little deeper every time until she was shuddering into exquisite orgasm, shaking and trembling as she climbed higher and higher, and her fingers clutched and dug into his tightly corded shoulder blades.
Sated, Kaya lay against him and felt complete.
She knew that she would always have to be careful, to make sure that the love she felt wasn’t reflected in her face. What would happen if she told him that she’d fallen in love with him? Right now, with no ring on her finger, he would back off. She knew he would. But later, if they were married? Something would be lost. The easy familiarity of friendship which he was willing to extend would seep away, replaced with awkwardness and discomfort until whatever they had, from lust to affection, would wither and die.
She couldn’t bear the thought of that.
But what she was signing up to? However tough it felt would be a lot less tough than the alternative, and she basked in that realisation and smiled at him.
‘I’ve missed you,’ Leo confessed in a roughened undertone. He stroked back her hair and smiled down at her.
You’ve missed this, Kaya thought realistically.
‘So,’ she said softly. ‘I guess plans need to be revisited?’
‘We can revisit them after we’ve had a swim, and this time I’m going to be right by your side, so you have nothing to fear. Then we’re going to have a long, lazy lunch, and then maybe we can have a bit more fun... And when we’re back at the villa we can do the revisiting...’
‘Okay.’ She began getting to her feet and he gently tugged her back down and tilted her so that they were looking at one another, their faces only inches apart.
Kaya could see every laughter line on his face, every worry line. His dark eyes were deadly serious.
‘Sure about this?’
Kaya nodded.
‘You were right.’ She sighed with heartfelt sincerity. ‘We’re bringing a child into the world. That child didn’t ask to be here but it’s important that we both do what’s right for him or her. And putting aside...well, the stuff I’d hoped for when it came to marriage and kids...is just something that has to be done.’
