I scented Vin running at my flank, which meant Laura probably wasn’t far behind. If we could circle around to cut him off, we’d have him. Only it was impossible to tell Laura and Vin this without alerting my brother to the plan.

I took my chase wide, heading to cut the corner off toward the highway, willing them to take the hint and leaving it in the hands of the Gods.

We approached the old highway, and I cursed when the sound of an idling engine reached my ears. How could he possibly have known? Vin snarled as I came around, darting at Rafael from one side while Laura came at him from the other. Rafael glanced at both of us, a smile on his mouth as he dove toward the car.

My wolf snapped, trying to catch him by the scruff and drag him back, but he dove in the car, and the car peeled out, spinning tires and leaving the three of us breathing hard in a black cloud of smoke.

A growl filled my chest, watching the car drive into the distance. The wolf shrugged when I took control of our body from him, too irritated to fight me. My body rearranged and snapped into place.

Had I let him slip from my fingers on purpose, or had he escaped by his own merit? I wasn’t sure I wanted to know the answer myself. I had enough soul-searching to do, considering I’d missed his deception at every step along the way.

Exhaling all the emotions, I turned to my mate. He collected me in his arms, rubbing his hands down my spine.

“I’m going to kill him if he steps foot on these lands again,” he said.

“Not if I get to him first,” Laura huffed.

“You can fight me for him.” Vin’s voice left no room for argument, and I didn’t care which one of us killed him.

“I need a drink.” I didn’t wait for them to join me. I headed back toward the bar. I didn’t bother running. Maybe the walk would be good for me.

Or at least it would give me the control over my temper to not smash every glass I touched.

Vin’s hand stroked across the small of my back.

“You going to sit in there naked?”

“Does it matter?”

He shook his head with a laugh. “This is something I’ll never get used to with your people.”

“You saw the quickening. We are comfortable this way. We are animals. We don’t have the years to grow into our snootiness as you do.” I side-eyed him so he knew my words were in jest.

“Even in my younger years, I would have never sat in a room disrobed the way you two do.”

I held the door and let him slip in past me. Laura wasn’t anywhere in sight. She’d either given us space or gone somewhere to take her rage out. I’d find her later and apologize again. Right now, I was too tired.

“Look, now it’s just you, and me and you can’t tell me it’s odd for me to be naked around you.”

“We are still in a public place, Dominic.” A hint of amusement crept into his tone.

“A closed bar I own, but I can assure you, no one would bat an eye anywhere in town at a naked wolf.”

“Because you run everywhere?”

I shrugged.

“Isn’t your bare arse a health code violation?” Vin blocked the way behind the bar and gestured for me to sit.

I took the stool and leaned both elbows on the top. “I don’t think the health department has ever paid us a visit.”

“Well, now I’m terrified to eat here.”

I rolled my eyes and took the whiskey he placed in front of me. “Still want to do this with me?” I asked after downing the entire glass.

He refilled it before making one for himself. “You think a little treason is going to scare me off?”

“It might?”
