“We had a connection, you can’t fake that!” He insisted.
I sighed, my heart heavy with Gabriella’s betrayal.
“Look, I’ve seen this before. Omegas will go to any lengths to get what they want. They are tired of being the weaker counterparts, so now they are always after power,” I explained dully.
In my heart, I knew it couldn’t be true. But I could not deny what I saw Gabriella doing. I really thought she was different, that she could be the one I could pour all of my pent-up love and affection into.
All I desperately desired in this world was to have a soft omega to spoil and care for. To love and protect until my dying day.
But I couldn’t shake the feeling that maybe I was wrong. I could’ve overreacted in the moment because of my traumatic past, I thought carefully.
I laid it out logically.
Gabriella had no reason to lie. She did not come with us willingly. Her circumstances led her to be here. From the moment I laid eyes on her until now, she had been nothing but sweet, gentle, and caring.
Shame burned in my chest.
How could I just jump in and assume without even asking her?
“It just doesn’t make sense,” Chase said in denial, shaking his head over and over again.
“It doesn’t,” I agreed.
“Maybe I came to the wrong conclusion,” I admitted. “I don’t have the best track record with omegas, so I could’ve missed the mark completely.”
Chase and Stone collectively glared at me.
Before they could open their mouths to curse me out, an ear-splitting scream rang out from upstairs, followed by an ominous dead silence.
Chapter 10
Chase
Weallglancedateach other for a split second before racing up the stairway. I reached the landing first and burst into the omega’s room.
“Look to the window. I’ll check the closet,” I barked out to whoever was behind me. I scanned the room for threats but didn’t see anyone.
Roman dropped to the floor behind me, checking under the bed.
I raced over to the closet, pulled it open, and swore.
Gabriella lay there, limp and unmoving. My heart stopped in my chest.
“I found her!” I called out to the rest.
I rushed over to her and checked for a pulse. Her heart was racing, and her skin felt clammy.
“Shit, she’s going into shock. She’s in the thick of her heat.” I announced, gathering her up in my arms and rushing her to the bed.
“There is no time to get her to a healer. We have to help her now!” I shouted out, unbuckling my belt and pulling down my pants.
Fuck, this wasn’t how I wanted our first time to be. But there was no choice. Her life hung in the balance. I would beg for her forgiveness later, and she would be alive to hear it.
Roman and Stone approached as well, intent on helping. I put a hand up and stopped Roman in his tracks.
“Look, boss. Stone and I got it. This will already be hard enough for her, but I think your face would be the last person she wants to see right now.” I said quickly. Every second counted.
Roman’s face tightened in pain, but he didn’t say a word, acknowledging the truth in what I had said. He quickly backed up and left the room.
