Because two of the people I care most about in the world are having a child...and I'm getting a sister.

"Ky... oh my god," I whisper. "I'm so happy for you."

"Well, don't be too happy," she says. "We've still got a way to go...but I'm happy, too. And I'm glad you're here."

"I am too," I say. My head is spinning with all I've learned in the past couple of hours and all the conversations I've had. It feels like this was the catalyst for a massive change, and I now know what to do.

"Everything okay?" Kylie asks.

I nod. "Yes," I say. "I just...I need to go make a call, but I'll be right back."

I turn around and brush past my dad, shutting the door behind me. When I pull out my phone, there's a text from Quinn, but I can't bring myself to look at it—because I'm not sure if I'm ready to talk to him again yet.

Instead, I pull up a number I've had logged for a long time, and that I've just never used despite repeated suggestions that I do so. I dial the number and listen as it rings, and then someone finally answers—a woman with a kind voice.

"This is Andrea Nguyen," she says. "How can I help you?"

"Hi, Andrea," I say. "I got your number from a friend...and I would like to schedule an appointment."

Chapter twenty-two

Quinn

"So..."AdamsaysafterMadison steps through the front door to go to class. "You're in love."

We're sitting at the kitchen table, splitting the last of the coffee. Adam has already gone and put his stuff in the guest room, clearly ready to settle in for a while, and Stanley is purring in his lap, the cat's eyes closed as he enjoys the beam of sunlight my younger brother sits in.

Adam is a decade younger than me, and I basically raised him in the absence of my parents. And in that regard...well, I fucked up. I guess I wasn't much more than a kid myself when our parents moved to Europe, leaving the two of us with a nanny in the off-season and at boarding school during the school year, but he deserved better.

I did a lousy job.

I've been paying the price ever since.

"Yeah, I'm in love," I confirm.

"I've never known you to have relationships."

That's because I haven't; I've had flings on and off, but never anyone serious. I don't tell him the reason why—because I had someone to take care of already, because I didn't trust myself when I had ruined my brother's life.

"She's special," I shrug. "I couldn't resist her. God knows I tried."

Adam chuckles. "And now you've taken her under your wing...fuck, you're such a mom."

I frown. "What the hell does that mean?"

"You don't know?" he says. "Quinn—I love you, man, but you're always insistent on taking care of people. Does she live here?"

"No, she's just...visiting," I mutter.

"And you gave her a job?"

"Yeah."

Adam raises his eyebrows. "Mmhm."

"I don't really know what you're getting at," I say.

Adam leans back in his chair, the cat still in his lap. Stanley mews softly at the intrusion on his comfort.
