I love you.
I catch myself just in time.
"Good night, Quinn."
"Good night, Madison. I'll see you in a couple of days."
As I hang up, my phone beeps with another text.
I miss you already. Goodnight, beautiful.
Chapter fourteen
Quinn
Mybrotheralwaysseemsto show up at the most inconvenient times.
I'm exhausted by the time Friday rolls around, tired out from taking care of Adam when I should be excited about driving up to Salem. He rolled in like a natural disaster on Wednesday, asking for help, and I've never been able to refuse.
Then we went upstate...and now I'm home, packing my bag on a Friday morning.
I don't take my car out very often when I could always walk or take the subway, so it's strange that this is my second road trip in as many days when I pull out of the parking garage. I have to use navigation to get to Madison's apartment, and it occurs to me that—even though I've spent months talking to her—I've never been to her place. I pull over in the drive in front of the building, a modest brick apartment complex.
I'm outside, I text her.You ready?
She texts me back right away.Almost—come on up to the fifth floor, first door on the right, no one will mess with your car in the drive.
You sure?
I can practically see the smirk on her face when she responds.Trust me.
I open the door and get out, locking my car behind me as I head inside. Madison buzzes me in, and I take the elevator up to the fifth floor, then turn toward her apartment and knock. Her voice comes a second later.
"Come on in, it's open!"
I open the door cautiously, half-expecting—and maybe half-hoping—that I'll find her naked. I don't see her at all, though; the apartment is a bit of a mess and oddly decorated.
I see what she means; she hasn't fixed it up yet and made it her own, and there are literal spaces that Kylie left behind.
"I'm in the bedroom!" she calls. "I just was wondering what I should bring..."
"Clothes for two nights," I call back, looking around as I follow her voice. "Something to wear to the performance, maybe something to wear if we want to explore Salem."
I find her standing beside the bed, her back to me, and she turns around and bites her lip. "That's not exactly what I meant."
My jaw drops as I look between the two lacy pieces of lingerie she's holding up—one dark green and the other white. I reach up to run my thumb over my lower lip, needing something to do with my hands, and Madison laughs softly.
"The green," I tell her.
She smiles and turns around to put it in her suitcase, zipping it shut before picking it up and turning toward me. "Guess we should get going," she says.
She walks toward me, keeping her eyes on me and dragging her hand across my chest as she goes.
And I can't resist her.
I stop her with my hands on her waist, and I press her against the opposite side of the door frame, kissing her hard. Madison drops her bag and moans softly as I slide my tongue past her lips, sipping the sighs from her lips and slipping my thumbs up past the hem of her shirt.
We break apart, gasping.
