Chapter Thirty-Two
Abigail
I’d just gotten back from my second ultrasound, and I still couldn’t believe the news. Twins. I was expecting twins. When they told me about the news at my first scan, I chose to believe it was a mistake. That somehow they were seeing and hearing something that wasn’t there. I guessed I went into denial that I was going to be a single mum of two, in one fell swoop. But the proof was lying in front of me right now. There was no denying that I was just over four months pregnant with twins.
Kelsey had gone with me to the scan, partly for moral support and partly because Jayden was feeling guilty that he’d had a part to play in the situation I was currently in. Kelsey was just about seven months gone now, and I could tell it was taking its toll on her. I had tried to convince her that I didn’t need anyone to come with me, but she wouldn’t take no for an answer. Honestly, I was happy that she had come along. At least now I wasn’t the only one to see that there were indeed two babies growing inside me.
When we told Mason and Jayden, they offered me any help that I needed. But there was only one thing – one person – I needed, and there was no way they would be able to give that to me. I needed Kye. The month I had spent apart from him hadn’t made life any easier. I still cried myself to sleep every night. Prayed that he would see sense and contact me, telling me he was wrong and wanted me back. But having spoken to Mateus a few times, I worried that he was in such a dark place that he would never come out of it.
I knew I couldn’t put it off any longer. Soon, there would be a time when I wouldn’t be able to travel. I needed to face my fear and head back to Madeira. I knew that Mateus and Sofia would be there. They had moved back to Madeira shortly after I had left. Mateus had been offered a senior role in the police force back on the island, which he immediately took. I wasn’t sure if it was to be closer to his family or to keep an eye on Kye. Either way, I was pleased their family was back together again.
I had promised both Mateus and Sofia that as soon as I’d had my second scan, I would head over to meet their family. Well, the time had come. I had booked my ticket and was going to arrive on the island tomorrow. I’d decided that I would stay in a hotel, even though I knew that Kye’s family would find me a room to stay in. I didn’t want to impose too much on their hospitality.
I picked up my phone and dialled Mateus’s number.
“Abigail, is everything okay? Nothing has happened to the baby, has it?”
I chuckled at the fact that it was Sofia who had answered the phone and immediately was worried about me and the baby – or babies, in fact.
“Hello, Sofia. No, everything is going according to plan. I just wanted to let you and Mateus know that I would be arriving tomorrow around one o’clock.”
“That’s wonderful news. Let me just get Mateus. He can arrange everything with you.”
Before I could tell her that I already had everything arranged, she had passed the phone over to Mateus.
“Abigail, so pleased you are coming over to see us. What time are you arriving? I will pick you up from the airport and bring you to the house that we have just bought. You can stay here with us.”
I had known this would happen. I just hoped he didn’t feel offended by what I was about to say.
“Mateus, that is very kind of you both. However, I have arranged a taxi to pick me up and take me to my hotel. I want to stay a week, maybe two. But I need my own space as well. This is just as overwhelming to me as it will be for your parents, especially with the news I have. I will send you the hotel details and you can pick me up on Wednesday. I need a night to get myself together. Please don’t be offended.”
I heard him sigh at the end of the phone. “I’m sorry, Abigail. I should have thought about how this would be for you as well. Of course I’m not offended, and I will speak to my mother tomorrow before you come over on Wednesday. She can be a little overpowering and will want to take over everything. I will try to keep her at bay as much as I can.”
“I understand how exciting this is going to be for her, believe me. I will send you all the details of my flights and where I am staying. I’ll call once I’m settled in the hotel, and we can sort out all the arrangements for Wednesday then.”
We said our goodbyes, and I went to pack for a couple of weeks in Madeira. Although the thought of it worried the hell out of me, perhaps finally I could get some of the answers I needed about Kye. I hoped I could, along with the hope that I might even get him back.
I had arrived back in Madeira yesterday afternoon and got to the hotel at around two o’clock. One of the reasons why I had wanted the afternoon to myself was that I had arranged to have a special spa afternoon specifically for pregnant women. It was just what I needed to unwind and relax before the mayhem of today.
Mateus had picked me up around fifteen minutes ago, and we were on our way to his parents’ house. I was about to meet the entire family, and to say I was nervous was an understatement. I had gotten over my morning sickness a few weeks ago, but this morning, you would have thought it was back. I’d woken up feeling nauseous and ran to the bathroom expecting to throw up at any moment. I hadn’t, though, and I had managed to eat a small breakfast. However, my worry had not gone away. My hands were sweaty and my heartrate increased, and this was before I walked into the house.
“Abigail, please try not to worry. My family is going to love you. Especially as you have come over to spend time with them, even though you are not currently with Kye. Family is important to them, and they would want your child to be part of their lives, whether Kye is in it or not. Thank you for this. It means a lot, and I know that you will get on well with Sofia and Aliciana.”
I smiled over at Mateus. That was the reason why I was here. I knew how important family was to Kye’s mum and dad, and Mateus himself. If it hadn’t been for him, then I would never have been here or come back.
“I just hope they can accept me when I tell them what I have to say.”
I saw Mateus look worried. I knew it was nothing to worry about, but I wanted someone else to be as worried as me about our meeting. I knew it was a little unfair, but I was as nervous as anything about this. Mateus feeling a little of what I was made me feel slightly better.
We pulled up outside his parents’ house. I wasn’t sure what to expect after seeing Kye’s place. I knew that it wouldn’t be anything like that, but seeing this beautiful bungalow in front of me, I was pleased to know they had a lovely place to live.
I wasn’t even out of the car before the door swung open and a woman who I assumed to be their mum rushed out towards me and engulfed me in a huge hug.
“Mateus, nunca nos disseste como a Abigail era bonita. Bem-vindo à minha filha.”
I heard Mateus laugh next to me as I continued to be embraced by his mum.
“Mãe, remember that Abigail only speaks a little Portuguese. She says that I never told her how beautiful you were, and she welcomes you as her daughter.”
