“Put him on the phone, please?”
Oh no. This wasn’t going well. “Hold on.” Kylian held the phone out to Rian. “Dad wants to talk to you.”
With a nod, Rian stood, circled his desk, and crossed the room. He pressed the device to his ear. “Hello?”
Kylian chewed his bottom lip and stared at Rian while hanging on every word of Rian’s side of the conversation.
“Okay.” Rian smiled. It was honestly a bit feral and frightening. “I’m not surprised, and I know.” There was a slight pause. “I do.” He laughed. “I know that too, and I agree.” His smile never dimmed. “You have nothing to worry about. This has nothing to do with you.” His gaze moved Kylian’s way as he added, “I love him.”
The air caught in Kylian’s throat. His gaze wouldn’t budge from Rian’s face. Rian couldn’t mean it. “Of course. Here he is.” Rian handed the phone back to Kylian.
Kylian’s numb fingers wrapped around the device. He wanted to scream for Rian to tell him everything, but he had to wait. “Hello?”
“King is here too.”
“Hi, Daddy.”
He heard the smile in King’s voice when he responded. “Hey, angel. I hear you’ve been busy.”
A snorted laugh burst from Kylian. “Yeah. A little.”
“We’re sad we weren’t there, but—if you’re happy—then we are too.”
Relief poured through Kylian. “Thank you for that.”
Bryson chimed in. “You don’t have to thank us. We’ll always have your back and that boy doesn’t have near enough bodyguards to protect him if he ever thinks to harm you.”
Kylian’s mind froze. He didn’t know how to react. Kylian had to clear his throat to respond. “So, you know about that?”
King and Bryson both laughed, but Bryson was the one who responded. “There’s nothing I don’t know, baby. I’m sure Rian doesn’t remember it, but years ago, I’m the one who helped secure his father the land where his home is built. Obviously, I never met either of Conor’s kids, but I knew of them. That’s why I hired Rian’s company to help King keep us safe. I knew they wouldn’t hesitate to shoot to kill if we were in danger.”
Kylian had no words.
Bryson kept going. “This marriage seems pretty reckless for a kid who’s never done a single wild thing in his life. But I suppose that’s how I comfort myself. You must know something huge about this guy that we don’t. With that said, we need you to know that this is still your home. If you ever change your mind, feel unsafe, or anything at all, we’re here. There’s no one so powerful that we can’t help. Understand? Don’t let anyone hurt or disrespect you and don’t let this guy get you hurt.” Bryson’s voice cracked. “You’re my baby. I can’t handle anything happening to you.”
Kylian’s eyes burned. “I understand.”
“We also think you should keep the house in Jersey for a little while. Don’t rush into limiting your options.”
“Okay.”
“Good boy. We love you and congratulations.”
Kylian sniffed. “I love you both so much.”
Bryson and King said, “I love you” at the same time, making Kylian smile.
“I guess we should let you get back to being a newlywed.”
“Yeah.” Kylian’s gaze moved Rian’s way, where he still hovered over him. “Rian still looks a little worried. I should reassure him.” He fought a laugh at Rian’s disgruntled expression at his words.
“Okay. Rian honestly seems like a great guy.”
“He really is.” Kylian said the words as much for himself as for his dads. He had been rash, and everything still felt like a dream, but he didn’t regret a thing. Kylian wanted Rian and this marriage more than ever. He thought—maybe—he loved Rian already. It seemed like months of crazily obsessing over following his every move had gotten under Kylian’s skin in more ways than one. How fucked up could he be?
While Rian felt sure he could soothe any ruffled feathers over their impromptu wedding, he still couldn’t wait for Kylian’s call to end. Kylian looked like a mess of nerves. Rian wanted to make things better. By the time Kylian set aside his phone, Rian was ready to hold him. So that was exactly what he did. He joined Kylian on the settee in his office and wrapped his arms around Kylian.
“Are you okay?”
