“It was.” She yawns. “I know it’s difficult. But it was really great. So…thank you.”
“I’ll do my best to keep it up.”
I close my eyes, leaning my chin against her head.
“I’d like that. Henry would, too.”
“I like you, Lil Bit.”
“Hmm.” I can hear the smile in her delighted moan, and I know she’s quickly falling asleep.
Exhaustion takes over for me soon enough, and I relish how it feels to have this woman in my arms as I fall into unconsciousness.
This is going to work. We’re going to figure this out, and it’s going to be amazing.
Hopeful dreams spin in my mind as I drift off. It’s the first time in a while I’m actually looking forward to having zero plans tomorrow.
Chapter21
Mae
After the absolute wonder that was our evening getaway and that first day of coming back to work for Reed, the past two weeks have flown by. It’s been fantastic, picking up with Henry right where we left off.
I’d missed him, and every day, he continues to show me how great a kid he is. Reed is showing some improvement, too.
I stay late nearly every night, and while we can’t be as loud in Reed’s bedroom, the sex is still incredible. All in all, there’s only one thing that could make things better.
Reed and I still haven’t talked much about my concerns for Henry, and I can’t shake the nagging feeling that we’ll need to have that talk sooner rather than later.
For now, I’ve decided to just enjoy this. I requested a lot from Reed when I agreed to take my job back, and I can’t expect him to change overnight.
At least that’s what Stevie and Johnny keep telling me.
Still, I know Henry needs more time with his dad, and the pressure of nearly always being the one to entertain him is starting to exhaust me.
All I want to do is sleep lately, and I seriously do not have time for that. Though it could be all those late nights with Reed.
Maybe I just need something to break up the routine a bit. I’m sure Henry would love a change, and doing something fun as a family is exactly what he and Reed need.
Looking over at Henry, who’s finishing up his homework at the kitchen island, an idea springs to life.
“Hey, I have a plan for when you’re done. You up for something different?”
Henry glances up with a huge smile, and I chuckle. A twinkle of excitement shines behind his eyes.
“Yes! I’m almost done.”
“Okay, well, finish up so I can tell you.”
Henry goes back to scribbling down answers to his math problems with record speed, and I search for some nearby places that’ll be open late.
After just a few minutes, Henry perks up, shouting, “I’m done!”
“Ha ha. Awesome. So what do you think about going swimming? We can run over to my place and grab my stuff before your dad gets home. It’ll be a fun surprise, and maybe we can even hit up your favorite restaurant?”
A flurry of hoots and ecstatic movement throws the otherwise quiet kitchen to an earsplitting decibel, and I shake my head as Henry runs laps around the island, screaming “Oh yeah” like the Kool-Aid Man.
“So, I’ll take that as a yes?”
