The sad thing is that she looks excited about it. I am forced to roll my eyes at her stupidity before standing up and excusing myself to go to the bathroom. I need a break from all this to gather my thoughts before facing what will make or break me. Once inside, I glance at my reflection in the mirror under the very harsh lighting and try to steel my expression. The last thing I need to do right now is reveal how utterly terrified I am and how desperate I am for this job. As soon as this Alex character senses that, I’ll be pushed to the back of the queue.
I pull out my phone and search for his name online, wanting to remind myself of his face. There’s no denying that he’s a good looking guy with his tanned skin, dark hair, and dark eyes, but I can barely see any of that. All I can see is hate.
I despise his family for what they’ve done to mine, and that’s all it’ll ever be. No dimples or amazing cheekbones will detract me from that. He can look like whatever the hell he wants; he’s still part of a conspiracy to ruin Dad’s life. Okay, Alex might not have been born then, just like me, but he must know of it, especially now that he’s in charge. He's certainly never done anything to put it right.
Of course, I would prefer to get my revenge on Peter, the man who did this, but he passed a few years ago before I was ready to get involved with the company, so there isn’t anything I can do now. If I’d known that he would get cancer – the only thing his company hasn’t found a drug for yet – then maybe I would have done things differently, but it doesn’t matter now. The time is now.
You can do this,I tell myself. It’s going to be okay. Forget about everyone else. Just focus on Alex; only he needs to be impressed, after all…
Alex
“Seeya,Michelle!”Icall out loudly over the sound of the roaring helicopter as it lands on the top of the International Pharma Co. office building. I’m pretty sure I can hear her yelling behind me, telling me that her name is Maria, but I don’t give a shit about that. We’ve had our fun now. I got some amazing, freaky sex, and she got a trip to Hawaii out of it… there’s no need to know one another’s names because we won’t ever see each other again.
There isn’t any reason for our paths to cross in the future. I made sure of that before we got involved. I’m not keen on awkward meetings with faces from my past, so I do whatever I can to avoid them.
She’ll get the hint. Eventually - I’m sure of it - she’ll be annoyed at first because they always are. But soon enough, all that she’ll remember are the gifts and the fun, and it will become a cute little memory for her. So, I’m not worried; it’ll be okay because it always is. I’ve been living this crazy lifestyle for years. It’s never gotten me in trouble before, so I know it won’t now. Plus, my reputation precedes me. Everyone knows what they’re getting involved in.
The further I walk away from the helicopter, the more I forget about her; my mind is already in business mode. My last PR manager walked out in a huff over some stupid office dispute last month, so I desperately need a new one, and the interviews are today. They’ve already been through the rigorous interview process to ensure they can keep up with the business’s fast paced, constantly moving nature; now, it’s up to me to make the final decision.
That’s the responsibility that Dad left me on his death bed, and I’m determined to make him proud. Sure, there might be elements of my life that he didn’t approve of, such as the long list of women that stagger in and out of my life, but I can change whenever I’m ready. The business stuff is what I need to get right now. My company needs me, and as always, it comes first.
“Nina!” I call out happily to my sexy PA. “How’s it going? Are the interviews going well?” As she moves closer, swaying her hips in a fitted pantsuit that hugs her curves nicely, I can already feel my cock standing to attention. I might have just had sex in the helicopter with Michelle not long ago, but there’s something about Nina that turns me on every time I see her.
Maybe it’s because she’s married and I’ve never been able to make her look my way. Perhaps it’s just because I haven’t had her yet. Maybe if she let me into her panties, everything will be okay. But of course, she never will, and it’s about time I accept that.
“They’re all waiting for you; the final five, anyway. Here are their resumes…” she hands me a stack of paper that I already know I won’t look through. Someone else has already done it and judged these people as worthy. I want to consider ifIbelieve people will fit my expectations and what the company stands for. I take that very seriously; I think it helps with the low staff turnover. We rarely have to do something like this, which is why we go all out at the time. “Some have flown through the tasks while others have barely scraped through. Do you want more information?”
“Nah, you know what I’m like. I know the right person when as I see them.”
As we walk through the building, and Nina gives me the information I’ve just told her I don’t need, I feel proud of my parents. They started this company all those years back and got it off the ground totally by themselves. Sure, Mom had to step back when she had me, but I know she played a massive role in making me happy. I’m glad that my family has managed to make such a significant impact on the world. It makes me feel worthwhile.
“Right, I’m going to wait in my office. So, send them in one by one.”
Each candidate that walks through my doors bores me silly, which is always a terrible sign. If they don’t excite me right away, I cannot see how they will interest the rest of the world, which is their job. Sure, they need to manage the reputation of International Pharma Co., but I will need them to create fascinating launches and events that keep people engaged in what we’re doing. It’s the only way to keep up with the ever-changing competitive world.
But then a striking blonde beauty wanders into my office, with an absolutelyIdon’t careexpression. she has me sitting up straighter in my seat and paying absolute attention. Of course, I would never hire someone simply because they’re hot - that would be business suicide - but even if this one turns out to be crap, I might have to ask her out for dinner.
“Zaya Webber,” she says slowly, extending her hand. “It’s nice to meet you.”
As our hands connect, I feel a frisson of excitement racing through me. I decide to ditch the usual questions and ask her something more interesting.
“So, let’s say I hire you,” I muse. I fold my hands and shoot her a curious look. There’s something in those dark blue eyes, something I want to reveal. This looks like a woman who has been hardened by external circumstances and some past pain, which has me wanting her even more. Most women are so easy that it makes me love the challenge. I feel this one would be the toughest nut to crack of them all. Maybe not sexually, but emotionally… I don’t usually have any interest in thefeelingspart, but with Zaya Webber, weirdly, I think I might.
I go on, “I want you to organize a gala within a week. How would you go about it?” This is a seemingly impossible task, but if she gives me an answer, I’ll respect the living hell out of her – especially as I want her to speculate.
“I would start by contacting all the higher ups in the pharmaceutical industry to invite them to an exclusive last minute event. Then, I would make it sound so thrilling that they would have to clear their schedules. While this was going on, I would find an amazing caterer, a well-reviewed decorator, and a bar tender who could be trusted…”
“Okay, okay.” I hold my hands up, laughing. “I trust you and believe with that fiery attitude, you could do it. In fact…” I give her a little look, wondering if I’m doing the right thing. My gut certainly agrees, but I need a split second to see if my brain is on board too.
“Look, I would like to offer you the job. You are the only person I’ve seen with any spark or desire, and I want to utilize that.” Her eyes light up, which I take as a good sign. She wants this desperately, which means she will do a fantastic job once here. Determination and a backbone are the hallmarks of the best employees. “So, do you think you could start today? Your office is already set up, and once you’ve done the paper work, there isn’t anything to prevent you from getting to work… after all, I need that gala to be organized by next weekend.”
“Are you serious?” she gasps at the happy surprise. “Oh, my God, that’s incredible. I would love that. And you really do need that gala, huh? I can make that happen. You can rely on me.”
Oh wow… that smile, those lips… she’s incredible. I almost regret giving her the job because it’ll make it more challenging to hook up. I mean, it wouldn’t be the first time I’ve dipped the pen in company ink; but I’m well aware of how messy it can get, and I’m not sure if I should be going through that again…Then again, maybe I won’t be able to resist.
“Let me show you around,” I say and take her through the building, proudly showing her everything, before taking her to the human resources to sort out all the legal documents. Usually, this is where I leave new employees, knowing they will be okay, but I don’t want to with this one for some reason. Zaya Webber seems to be changing my opinion on everything already…
“Right, let me take you to your desk.” As I take her into a spacious office with the most phenomenal view, I enjoy how her eyes light up. She is a strong and confident woman, who probably has a promising career behind her, but she’s impressed by International Pharma Co., which is the way I always want it to be. I’m determined to be the best of the best and serve Dad’s memory well. “Shall we talk about your duties?”
