Page 106 of For the love of Kane

“Blaze,” Kane chuckles. “I love you too.”

As soon as this shit is over, I’m dragging all their asses to the nearest courthouse. I want them to be mine in every sense of the word. Kane goes back to the fridge and starts making sandwiches. Excitement is pulsing in the air, but so is nervousness. We’re close to finding out who is behind this, I can feel it.

“How’s Kira settling in?” Jaxon asks.

“Really good. She wanted to give us space to figure all this out,” Kane answers.

“And she’s afraid to come in the house. She doesn’t want to see her brother naked,” Eli comments.

“That’s a shame. He’s hot as fuck naked,” I add.

“Ew, Blaze,” Jaxon laughs. “That’s her brother.”

I shrug. “I stand by my statement.”

Jaxon clears his throat and pushes his plate away. “Can I ask what happened to her?”

I watch Kane struggle with that question until he rolls his shoulders back. “My father had some problems with people in his territory not listening. He sent me and Blaze to teach them a lesson. We ripped through their piss poor crew and thought we had it settled.” Kane stops, swallowing past the pain. “A few days later, Father gets a call from that same crew, telling him we would pay for what we did. We ignored it, thinking they couldn’t touch us. They set the house on fire that night, trapping Kira inside.”

“Holy shit,” Jaxon gasps, grabbing Kane’s hand.

“They thought it was me and Blaze inside that bedroom, so they blocked the door so it couldn’t be opened. It didn’t have a balcony then, and Father had all the windows sealed off for security purposes so she couldn’t escape. When she called, I was across the city, and I almost got to her too late.”

“When we found her,” I continue, when Kane stops to collect himself, “more than seventy-five percent of her body was burned. She stayed in the hospital for a long time and then went to that rehab.” When I look at Jaxon, he has tears rolling down his face. “She should have hated us all.”

“It wasn’t your fault,” Jaxon says. “She said so herself.”

“It was your father’s,” Eli says quietly. “He should have done more to protect her.”

“Father should have done a lot of things,” Kane says through gritted teeth. “Taking care of us wasn’t one of them.”

We sit in silence, Kane and I reliving that night. We rushed into the house without caring about our safety and pulled her out. I’ll never forget her screams as the skin was slipping from her bones. Or Kane’s face when he realized it should have been us.

“I know who it is,” Saint announces, busting into the kitchen. I can already tell by his face that I’m not going to like what he has to say. “It’s your father.”

All hell breaks loose, and I know one thing.

I’ll finally get the chance to end this motherfucker for everything he’s put Kane through.

CHAPTER36

KANE

Ijump from the stool so fast that it crashes to the floor. “What the fuck did you just say?”

Saint looks at me nervously, remembering what happened the last time he had to deliver bad news. He almost didn’t make it out of my office alive when he told me Jaxon was an undercover cop. “Your father is the informant.”

“Saint, you better make damn sure you’re right about this,” I say. “Show me.”

I follow him to my office, and he sweeps his arm out to sit in front of the laptop. “It’s all right there. He’s been talking to them since you took over.”

“Does it say why?”

“No. But he didn’t hold anything back. Everything about you and your preferences in men, Blaze’s…issues, Eli, and any business dealings is in that file. Who else would know all of that?”

“Kane,” Jaxon says quietly. “Is it true?”

I close my eyes to rein in my temper before I turn to look at him. “Did you know?” I watch his face fall, but I refuse to take it back. “Did you know he was the one feeding them information?”
