His overconfidence and authority meant squat to her. His previous pompousness was useless and stupid. He could see now how he had been an ass to those around him. How could finding his mate have instantly opened his eyes to all his faults?

Something about the power and pull of the matehood made him want to do all the falling to his knees. He was already having succulent thoughts about exploring the landscape of her body with his tongue, committing every scent and taste to memory in the gallery of his carnal mind.

It wasn’t just the hormones that were raging in him like an angry sea. It was a sort of romance that he had never considered being active inside him. He had done the gentlemanly thing for shifter women for practical reasons, but there was always an ulterior motive … getting them into bed for a tumble or two.

The king still wanted to get Addie into bed, but he couldn’t manipulate her into doing it. He had to change to be worthy of her. To be caring and empathetic.

He snorted to himself, moving down the hallway and finding a semi-frantic Ruzyll. He touched his shoulder and spun him around. His chief of staff had the look of a child ready to be punished.

“Nothing is wrong,” the king began, swallowing somewhat shamefully. “But I need one more thing from you.”

Ruzyll nodded enthusiastically, though there was already a lot on his plate.Nothing that he couldn’t handle,Mahes presumed.

“Anything, sir,” he said.

“I need you to do some research on human women. Find out what they like about romance, about being ‘wooed.’ Get back to me as soon as you can.” Ruzyll quickly turned away, but Mahes stopped him. “Ruzyll,” he said, “thank you for all you’ve done for me over the years. I may not have told you enough times, or ever really, that you’re the best second a king could ever want.”

Ruzyll’s expression went from surprise to confusion to pride. “Thank you, My King. I like you too.”

Mahes rolled his eyes as his second zipped away in the direction he had been moving.

Mahes was thankful for his promptness, then decided that he should go out to the pool where he said he would meet her. It wouldn’t give her such a great impression if he was tardy.

But when he went out along the side of the kitchen, he spotted her. He halted, feeling like some enormous beast had pummeled him in the gut.

She was wearing a revealing bikini, which showcased her flawless form. Her long limbs glistened under the suns, giving them a peachy, plush impression from the spot he was standing. Her breasts were held up by the fabric of the bathing suit like two precious orbs, perfectly circular and ripe-looking.

She couldn’t have been more beautiful. His cock stiffened in his swimsuit, hard as Nova Auroran cobblestone. He hadn’t felt that hard that quickly since he was a teenager and never since he had become king.

His lion crooned inside him, wanting her more than the air he breathed, craving her touch while simultaneously knowing that if she did touch him, he just might burst into a wildfire.

Then she summoned him over. His throat ran dry.

When Mahes sat next to her, he caught her scent in his pores and nostrils like a stiff brush of wind. It was unlike anything he’d picked up before, scents he may not have been completely familiar with.

That was when she had stumped him with the question asking who he was. He felt oddly self-conscious when he told her he was a king, a mere Earth woman hearing words she wasn’t quite accustomed to.

Plus, the boyish sensation of being near her was rather irritating. It made him feel foolish, but it was the truth. He was hanging on her every word.

Then she leaned forward, the cleavage bursting with that sweet, zesty scent.

“Oh, it more than suits me,” she’d said.

The king was relieved. However, her response to him being a king was somewhat tamer than what he had expected. Nova Aurora women would have gasped and lost themselves in a fit of delight. And though Addie seemed to be happy, her cute smile reaching the tips of her earlobes, Mahes still thought the idea of dating a king should have given her more of a rise.

The intoxication of her presence was baffling.

“So, what is it that you do for a living?” he asked to keep the conversation going.

Addie sat back in the chair. She spoke in a nonchalant way, a twinkle in her eye fascinating the king to no end.

“I am a singer back on Earth. I record albums, and people buy them. Then they come to see me sing them. Do you know what I mean?”

Mahes was hunched over in his chair, his expression having shifted to one of indifference. He had an idea what she meant, but instead of responding with an equal amount of enthusiasm, he merely nodded.

“Okay,” he said.

The smile on her face disappeared. Mahes instantly knew he had fucked up in his response. His lion made a little moan of disappointment. She looked away from him again, gazing up at the sky with disappointed pensiveness.
