“Meredith!” he shouted out as she walked to her car.

She looked up, and he couldn’t believe it, but she smiled. “Hello, Quinn.”

“Sorry to bother you again, but I got that number for you,” he said, passing Megan’s card to her. “She’s from the area and knows the value of the property. She’ll get you what you deserve.”

“I don’t really deserve any of it,” Meredith said, holding onto the card. “But thank you.”

She gave him a nod, and he returned the gesture. But she didn’t move. She tapped the card against her leg. Then suddenly blurted out, “I apologize for being so difficult.”

He jerked his head back, but then shook his head. “No, I get it. This all must be difficult for you.”

“Well, I appreciate your help,” she said, holding up the card. “I realize this all must be difficult for you, too.”

Quinn appreciated the recognition.

“I think I’m going to take some time going through his stuff,” she said, looking back at the house. “My sister and I plan to go through everything this summer.”

Quinn’s heart started pumping hope.

“Really?” He stuffed his hands into his pockets. “That’s good to hear.”

She looked down at the card and then back at him. And that was when he saw the change in her. Her pained eyes appeared brighter, bluer. She looked lighter. Her shoulders were pulled back comfortably, not ready for confrontation.

She looked…happy. Well, not happy, he corrected himself. But no longer as troubled or as angry as she had been just a few hours ago.

“I know you’re not technically my lawyer, but I wondered if I needed help with all of this, if I could—”

“I want to help. No need to hire anyone,” he said, jumping in before she could finish. He wanted nothing more than to help and convince her to stay. “I want to do this for you and your family.”

She smiled again, then looked out at the water. “I appreciate what you’re doing for me.”

He nodded, not sure why his collar was heating up while he looked at her. Was it because things might work out with the property? Or was it because he couldn’t keep his eyes off her?

“Let me know if there’s anything I can help you with,” he said, darting his eyes away before she caught him staring.

She crossed her hands together, holding them in front of her. “I will.”

And with that, he gave a wave goodbye and walked back to the house.

“Tell the Bee Queens or whatever…” she stumbled with their title.

“The Queen Bees,” he said, his heart pumping more.

“Yes,” she said, but she stopped as she headed back toward Jacob’s cottage. “Tell them they can continue working the fields.”

“Will do,” he said, standing in place, tongue tied by his shock.

That’s when Remy came out of the house, smiling at Quinn.

“Good morning!” she said, with sunglasses on.

As the two got into the car, they both rolled down the windows, and waved at Quinn as he stood shell-shocked by the sudden transformation.

What happened between the sisters?

CHAPTER22

Meredith and Remy decided to divide and conquer. Remy started in the kitchen. First, she focused on the appliances, cleaning out the fridge, then the stove and oven.
