“Oh.” She hopped down from her place on the bar stool and carried her empty plate around to the sink. “Like when you buy a house?”

Taking my mug of tea in hand again, I shrugged a little and sipped a couple of times. “Yeah. Sometimes just like that.”

“So, what brings you to Belle Springs?” Savannah chimed in.

This was where it got tricky. I couldn’t lie to her. To either of them. For a couple of reasons.

One, I didn’t want to.

Two, if I did and they found out about it then they wouldn’t trust me. As a good lawyer, I knew how to skirt the truth like an absolute professional. “I can’t tell you everything, since there are privacy laws in place to protect my clients.” Savannah nodded in an understanding way.

“Ooh, you mean attorney-client privilege,” Mackenzie interrupted. The excitement in her voice was infectious. I didn’t get a reaction like this from anyone back home. Especially not my own family. “Because whatever you talk to them about is confidential. Just like a doctor and their patient.”

“Yeah. Just like that.”

She smiled, bouncing up and down on the balls of her feet. I’d never seen someone so excited to be talking about my boring day-to-day life. “I’ve seen them say it on the crime shows I watch.”

She certainly seemed to enjoy watching those crime shows, not that I blamed her. I enjoyed them too. “Then you know I can’t tell you anything that risks exposing who they are.”

“I understand, Sienna. Though, is there anything at all you can tell me? You must be here for a reason. Most people don’t come to our small town without one.”

I sipped some more tea before setting the mug down and looking between the two of them. I noticed their eyes were locked on me, waiting for my answer. I decided to continue with the truth, as close to it as I could. “There is a client of mine who lives out of this area who is interested in purchasing several parcels of land in the Belle Springs township.”

As soon as it left my mouth, I wanted to take it back. I could have given everything away just then. But when there was no recognition in either of their eyes at my answer, it meant neither of them knew about Daddy sniffing around their family ranch. “Gotcha. You’re here to see if you can purchase the land on your clients’ behalf?”

Relief coursed through me. Smiling at Mackenzie, I nodded. “Correct.”

“Perhaps I could help you. My family knows everyone in town.”

Her offer was very tempting. After all, having someone like Mackenzie with me would give me more credibility. From what I could gather, the Larsens were all well-liked. That mechanic came last night the moment Ryder called him. I couldn’t imagine anyone doing that for someone they weren’t fond of.

But I couldn’t do that. Not to this family when they’d taken me in. When they had cared for me like one of their own last night. When they gave me shelter; fed me. “That is a wonderfully generous offer, but I wouldn’t be much of a lawyer if I couldn’t do this by myself.” Besides, they owned one of the parcels of land I was sent here to secure.

“The offer is there if you need anything.”

Since she had brought it up, there was one thing I needed. “Well, now that you mention it.”

Savannah took my plate with hers and rinsed them in the sink. “Ask it, Sienna, and we’ll do everything in our power to help you.”

“Could you tell me where I could hire a car?” Taking the hair tie from my wrist, I then scooped all my hair together and put it up into a messy bun.

“I’m sure Ry would be happy enough to lend you his truck.”

I laughed nervously and they eyed me curiously. “I can’t drive a stick,” I confessed.

Savannah’s laughter was infectious and soon enough I was smiling and laughing along with her. “City people.”

“You could take Colton’s Mustang.” Kenzie giggled and Savannah raised an eyebrow.

“She won’t get very far without an engine.”

I giggled a little. “Might get me further than the stick, though.”

Once we finally settled down a little, she walked away, returning a moment later with a set of keys dangling from her pinkie. A bright pink cowboy boot keychain glinted in the light. “Take mine, it’s an automatic.”

“I think the three of us are going to get along famously.”

Watching the sisters look at each other again, I waited. Then they both came closer, wrapping an arm around each other’s waist. “You know what?” Kenzie started. “We do too, Sienna.”
