He leans in and sweeps my lips with his. “I love your hair like this,” he whispers as he pulls on my two braids. The next few minutes are a blur as he completely undoes me with the type of kiss I will never get enough of. It’s broken by Chloe and Adam entering the house, also requesting to use the bathroom.
Once everyone is finished, I lock up and make my way over to Casey’s car to cuddle my little boy, who, like Gunner, is now wearing his shades. With Jack safely strapped in and ready to talk Knox’s ear off in the backseat, I climb into Gunner’s truck. He grabs my face, planting a quick peck on my lips and then turns the engine on.
“Ready to road trip?” he grins, putting his aviators back on.
“I am. I love going to the beach house, and I loooove that we’re going to be together this year.” I grab his hand, kissing the back of it, unable to stop smiling. He rubs my cheek with his knuckle and then pulls his hand away to put the car in drive. Casey signals to pull out and we do too, Callan and Rex following behind us. As soon as we are out of Cherry Tree Lane, Gunner’s hand is back in mine and resting on my thigh.
“Do you know how many times I’ve wanted to do that?” he asks while continuing to navigate the car.
“Do what Gunn?” I say waving at Jack with my free hand. He’s turned around in his seat and is pulling faces at us out of Casey’s back window.
“Take your hand in mine or touch your thigh like this.”
I turn to look at him. “I don’t know. But I’m gonna guess, a few?”
He shakes his head. “Try every goddamn time you’ve been in this truck.”
“Really?” I know he’s said he’s liked me for a while, especially this last year but I had no idea of the effect I’ve actually had on him.
“Yep. I’ll never get enough of you Coralie. Forever isn’t nearly long enough for us.”
He’s so dreamy. “You make me so happy, Gunner.”
“Right back at ya, Peaches. Now turn up the music, my hands are busy.”
He tickles my thigh to make his point and I heave a fake sigh.
“Do I even want to know what’s about to blast out of here? I’m thinking it’s going to be reminiscent of my iPod playlists circa 2008.”
He smiles the biggest smile ever. “Then you’re in for a treat.”
Instead of me messing about with the buttons and dials on his dash, he pushes two on his steering wheel while carefully pulling onto the freeway, and ‘What A Man Gotta Do’ by the Jonas Brothers blares out of his car sound system. Then, he starts belting out the words. A big goofy smile on his face singing word for word and adding in a little head bop and chest pump here and there while stealing glances at me as I giggle my head off.
Gunner loving boybands and pop is one of the best things about him. There’s a fourteen-year-old hiding under all that muscle and sexiness.
For the first part of the journey, there’s not much to see outside of the car but I don’t think it would matter if there was. The freeway could be lined with masses of Sequoia trees or something else equally picturesque and I still wouldn’t notice because I can’t take my eyes off the man sitting next to me. He’s so gorgeous inside and out, my heart and my legs clench tight.
“Do you want more kids?” he asks, breaking the easy and comfortable silence between us.
“Doyouwant children?” I ask throwing the question back at him.
“Honestly, if you were done? I’d be satisfied helping you raise Jack but if you did want more children, I’d want to give them to you.”
“Oh, Gunner,” I say softly. “How many would you like?”
“Truthfully, another couple.”
And do you see what he did right there? He said it as if he already had a child. As if Jack was his. I can’t help but nod, seeing our future flash right before my eyes.
“I’d love that, bringing two tiny Gunners into the world. Where do I sign up?”
“Right here!” He motions to his crotch. “But you don’t need a pen, just your pretty lips.”
I swat at him. “You’re ridiculous.” And then I smile some more.
“Seriously, how about we let this play out a while, just be the three of us, and then we’ll get right on trying to knock you up in a year or two.”
“You’ll have to make an honest woman out of me first.”
