Luckily, the voice in the back of my head won over. Even though it took superhuman strength to not cross the line I’d been so desperate to. Instead, I traced the outlines of her beautiful face while my eyes became accustomed to the dark.

“Thank you for being here, Gunner Grey,” she had whispered and when I tried to explain the draw I had to be with her, I choked on my words.

It didn’t matter though because she took a hold of my fingers, laced them with hers, and laid next to me for hours, curled into my side with her hand and mine splayed across my chest.

My free hand stroked gently along her spine and played with locks of her hair, wanting to commit every perfect moment of the night to memory.

The way her warm curves felt against my body.

The scent of her shampoo and the delicate notes of her perfume—citrus, rose, and apple.

Best goddamn Christmas present I could have asked for.

She slipped back out of the room at the ass crack of dawn so her family were none the wiser. I still to this day wonder if I dreamt the whole thing up, because she has never mentioned it and neither have I.

What did happen though, was I got to spend the holidays with my two favorite people in the world. Coralie and Jack. Jack and I built the Star Wars Lego set I gave him and the look on Coralie’s face was everything.

We’ve danced around each other for the last couple of years, but I’ve been fighting my urges for a lot longer than that. I get vibes from her like she’s into me and we do a shit ton of stuff together, but for me, it goes much deeper than friendship.

I’ve been harboring feelings for her for so long that it drives me to the edge of insanity.

My fingers constantly itch to touch her, feel her. When she sits in my truck, I want to hold her hand or palm her thigh. I want to kiss her all the time and—

“Gunn, man,” Adam’s voice slices through my thoughts, “you invited us round and haven’t said anything, for like ten minutes.”

I mentally shake my head and pick up the beer bottle. “Oh sorry. Was just thinking.” Adam smiles at Callan who offers a small smirk.

“Yeah, bet you were.”

A knock at the door has me placing the beer down after only one sip. I go to stand as Adam jumps up out of his seat.

“I’ll get it,” he sings, but Casey knows my door code and before Adam reaches it, I hear the rest of the boys enter the house.

“I think he’s a little shell shocked,” Adam tells them, as they all take a seat and Rex passes out the beers he brought over. We won’t be drinking again after tonight, so a couple more won’t hurt.

“So, big day,” Casey utters just as Knox says, “Everyone’s here.” His back to me, he props an iPad up on my fireplace and then does something to my TV. Suddenly, Casey’s other two brothers are on the flatscreen.

“What is this?” I ask, confusion flooding my voice.

“This, Gunner Grey, is your intervention,” Adam states, and the words elicit a growl to bubble up out of me. When Coralie calls me that, it goes straight to my dick. When Adam says it, I want to punch him in the face.

Heat flashes across my neck, and I rub it feeling nervous.

“Why do I need an intervention? I’m not passed out on my bathroom floor,” I say, glaring at Casey who when his girlfriend broke up with him, didn’t take it very well—and that is putting it mildly.

“Thanks for that Gunn. But this is a long time coming and we want to make sure you’re ready.”

I do not like the sound of that. “Ready for what?” I ask no one in particular.

“Ready to woo the fuck out of our sister,” Knox adds.

Oh shit. They actually think I need their help? They’re all fucking clueless. I don’t even know how Rex got Chloe to marry him.

“Nope,” I stand and shake my head. “Are you all complete idiots? We’re about to go into the fucking playoffs and this is what you want to talk about?”

Rex slaps his knee. “Exactly. It’s perfect timing.”

Everyone looks to the TV; Jase is on the screen. He’s the youngest of the Madden clan, so he naturally rolls his eyes and then goes about explaining why this asinine plan is so great.
