“A loan will put us in more debt,” James said. He added, “Have you thought this through?”

Honestly, I hadn't thought it through. I had forty-eight hours to come up with a plan, and I had just randomly come up with a solution I thought was the perfect plan.

“A bank loan will put us in more debt,” Jonathan contributed. “We can't afford the interest the banks will request for.”

“I will take a loan,” I replied. “I didn’t say I will take a loan from a bank.”

I reminded both of my staff what they had to do; then I dismissed them.I scheduled a meeting with the stakeholders for tomorrow and let Jonathan and Henry handle the rest.I left the hotel late into the night to avoid the cameras. However, I came home to Amelia’s worried face.

She had her hands on her hips as she expressed her displeasure over the reformation of the park. “That place means a lot to my parents. That was where my parents had their first date in the eighties.”

“The park means a lot to everyone in Richmond,” I replied. “I wasn’t able to talk Mom out of it.”

“Well, you have to try harder,” she sighed, bouncing on the fluffy sofa. “Do you think your mom is doing the conversion just to get the focus off you? The news is going viral all over social media, covering up the bankruptcy news. This is not a tactic, or is it?"

I thought about the possibility of the conversion being a stunt now that Amelia mentioned it. Mom was probably taking the media focus from my life to hers. However, Mother was a mysterious woman; it was quite difficult to know if she was ever playing a stunt or not.

“She’s been trying to eradicate Father’s memory from Richmond.” I sat near Amelia and explained, “It's like she doesn’t want him to exist in our memories any longer. I can’t say if it is grief or selfishness.”

“Do you think she hated your father?”

"I don't know," I sighed. "I think she is paying him back for something he did while alive or something he didn't do."

Amelia took my hand. “I think we’re getting ahead of ourselves here. You should just believe that this is a media stunt created by your mother.”

“And if it is not?”

“We’ll fight her,” Amelia replied. “We will protect your father’s structure at all costs.”

I increased the TV volume as James appeared on the screen. He’d done as he had been told. He’d read a well-written script that addressed the venture’s predicament and announced the meeting for tomorrow.Somehow, I sighed with relief. This was the first time in two days that I believed there was light at the end of the tunnel.

Chapter thirty-two

The Unexpected Fall

Amelia

“You look pale,” Mother said as she kissed me on the cheek. I walked into the huge home where I grew up; nothing seemed familiar anymore.

Mother was doing some sort of decorating, especially now that Christmas was only three months away. She’d also changed some of the home aesthetics to newer, trending ones. It was like I was walking into a stranger’s house.

“I just,” I replied, “have something to tell you.”

Mother grabbed my hand; she didn't let me speak as she dragged me poolside.

“Please don’t tell me you’re having an affair with the pool guy!”

Mother turned in disgust, “God no!”

“Is Dad having an affair with the pool guy? Or anyone?”

"Amelia, no one is having an affair," she replied, placing me on the chair by the pool. I sat straight up, quite uncomfortable, but I managed to look like it was fine.

"Your dad and I have been thinking since Henry became bankrupt; we want you to know that we support you if you want to divorce Henry."

My jaw dropped in total disbelief. I couldn’t believe my ears. Mother was telling me that it was okay to leave the man I loved because he doesn’t have money anymore.

"We'd find a perfect match for you; I mean, you're still young and beautiful." Now, I wished Mom would stop speaking for our sake.
