Amelia's parents looked over at my mother; now, they shared the fearful look on Mother's face.

“We’ll revise our decision,” Mother declared, her voice softened.

“Tomorrow,” I responded. “I want to hear your decision by tomorrow.”

I walked out of the huge house and sighed heavily when my car door shut. I headed home, reaching for Amelia. I told her to prepare for her work tomorrow.

“What did you tell my parents?”

I shrugged. "I told them I don't want you to resign; it is as simple as that."

Amelia didn’t believe me. She didn’t think her parents would change their minds because I had spoken with them. She persisted in knowing what I had told her parents.

“I told your parents that I'd get a vasectomy if they don't let you pursue your career.” I paused and added, “I told them we'd never have kids if they are worried we won't raise them well while you work.”

Amelia laughed at my audacity to threaten our parents with a vasectomy.

“You were bluffing, right?”

“No,” I replied. “I wasn’t bluffing. I’d do it in a heartbeat.”

Amelia placed my head on her chest. I wished she knew what I was ready to do to make her happy. I’d lay down my life. The night was almost over when Amelia got a call from her youngest sister. She looked up at me with surprise.

“My sisters never call unless it is an emergency.”

“They can have a change of mind.” I urged her to pick up her sister's call.

Amelia's face slowly turned white as she listened to her sister's panicked voice on the other end of the line.

She slowly dropped her phone. “My father has an adult child from someone.” She paused. “He just showed up at the house, and he looks exactly like Father.”

I scoffed, "He can be a random lookalike who wants to play pranks on your family." I tried to make the situation less trivial until we could be certain.

“He is about my age,” Amelia continued. “This isn't a prank. Nor is it a mux up.”

Amelia raged with anger. As a young woman, she had sacrificed a lot for her family, only to be informed that her father had been unfaithful all along. I feared that this news would change her a lot.

Meeting the Only Brother

Amelia

“I have a brother,” I whispered to myself, but it was loud enough for Henry to hear. I couldn't believe I’d have to accept a brother that my parents had kept from me all my life.

Henry looked as helpless as I was. He was also confused. He had lots of questions swirling around his head. Did Mother know about this affair? Why did my parents keep him away from their children all this while? Why did he decide to show up now? Did he want some of my parent’s property or shares? He needed the whole story, and so did I.

“I have to go to my parents.” I scrambled for my car keys. “I need to go now!”

Henry stopped me. “I’ll go with you.”

“No,” I replied, “I can handle it alone.”

“No, you can’t,” Henry insisted. “I can’t let you drive on the street this way. Your mind is not in the right place.”

Henry was right; my mind wasn’t intact. He was the only person with a grip on reality in the house. “I will wait for you in the car if you don’t want me involved in your personal business.”

“I–” I started to say, but Henry stopped me. He told me to get ready to visit my parents.
