‘Look at me...’
She was too nervous to look at him. Because she knew now that she had loved him on sight, and she no longer knew how to deny it.
‘You don’t have to hide here...’ he said.
Oh, but she did. Because with each deep thrust she felt as if he were approaching her dangerous truth, and she feared she might blurt out that she loved him, wanted him, and did not know how to keep her promise to herself to be the first to leave.
But there was no place to hide as he shifted her legs higher, and she moaned in pleasure at the new sensations Elias gave her as he moved deep within her.
‘Slowly...’ she begged, and yet he was taking her faster.
She’d wanted to retain some semblance of control, because she was losing it now. She wanted promises and for ever and for this never to end...
They were way beyondslowly.
Her hands dug into his buttocks, every thrust a jolt of pure pleasure as she wrestled with herself, angry at her own devotion. She almost laughed, because his rapid strokes were setting her alight. She was playing with fire and she liked being this close to the flames.
She was the risk-taker, Carmen knew, because she was gambling with her heart.
‘Carmen...’
She heard the call of her name and clenched her teeth, maybe to halt her own verbal response, or maybe in ecstasy.
She knew not.
Then she heard his loud, breathy shout and she gave in...just let her body sink into the deep pleasure of intimate pulses as he shot inside her...just caved in, moaning unformed thoughts that he’d somehow dragged out of her.
‘No me dejes ir,’Carmen pleaded as he stroked those last drops of pure pleasure into her, and she felt every last flicker before he collapsed on top of her.
She closed her eyes and tried to remember again how to breathe.
Elias lay there. He knew he was by far too heavy for her, but for now he was unwilling or unable to move.
He was not quite ready to return to the soft lights and the bedroom he’d thought he knew, because the world felt rearranged. The grandfather clock was chiming that it was two in the morning, and he felt as if he didn’t quite know where they’d just been.
Then he felt her wriggle beneath him, and he rolled off her, still catching his breath—or was it his thoughts? Because he knew he wanted more brass bands and odd conversations in his life.
‘Can I tell you something?’ she said.
‘Yes.’
‘Never to be repeated.’
‘Agreed.’ He was ready, in this moment, to hear anything.
‘Every morning I hear John and Laura having sex...’
He gave a low laugh.
‘It’s my alarm clock,’ Carmen said. ‘It’s all very...’ She turned and looked at him. ‘I wouldn’t like to be in the room above us.’
‘Better than the room below,’ he said. ‘Where do they all think you are tonight?’
‘I said that I’d met some guy online.’ She told him about the car, and the flowers, and all her efforts to hide where she was really going.
‘You really don’t want this getting out?’
It was a first for him to be with a woman who wasn’t looking for more from him than he wanted to give.
