“I hear you know which fucker did this to them?” Luca growls, rubbing his hand in his fist.

“We do,” Archer confirms. “And trust me, they’ll both pay for what they have done.”

Luca Silver nods his head, the anger burning in his eyes. “We’ll talk later.”

“Sure thing. Now can I take her in and then she’ll stop pestering everyone and get back to her own bed?”

Emma chuckles and gestures to the door. “Go for it. We will all grab a brew and some food at the cafeteria while you're both here.”

“Yes, go and take a break,” I assure her, and smiling at me Emma grabs her bag then they all head for the lift.

Archer opens the door and wheels me through. I gasp when I see my friend lying there, bruised and battered. He has a large cut on his cheek and stitches across his forehead.

“Let me take the wheel, princess,” he orders. Reaching over me, he takes control of the car. “We’re going to crash, Eliza. There’s no avoiding it. When we round the next bend, I’m going to veer us towards the trees, and I’ll make sure this side of the car takes the impact.”

“No! Damon! That means you’ll get hurt.”

Damon looks at me as he steers the car from his position in the passenger seat. “We’re both going to take a hit anyway princess. I’d rather I take the brunt of it than you and that baby in your tummy.”

“Scar, Scar! Are you okay?”

I blink to find Archer crouched down in front of me, a deep frown wrinkling his forehead. “Should I take you back to your room?”

I reach out and squeeze his hand, my eyes filling with unshed tears. “No, honestly, I’m fine. I just had a flashback to the accident. He saved me Arch. He made sure the car hit the woodlands on his side so that I would be okay.” I wipe at my eyes as a tear falls. “He made sure his side of the car took the impact.”

Archer leans in and wipes another tear from my face. “Then it sounds like I owe this guy a huge debt.”

“How will a thank you ever be enough for what he did for me?”

Archer shakes his head in response. “I don’t know, Scar, but I know one thing: The Aces will leave his family alone from now on, or they’ll have me to deal with. I’ll never forget that he is the reason that you are sitting here in front of me today.” He gets to his feet, and he leans in to drop a kiss on my forehead before he wheels me to the side of Damon’s bed.

I reach up and take his hand in mine. “Hey Day. Thought I’d come and hold my hero’s hand for a while.”

“Scar, I’m going to give the two of you some time alone. I’ll be right outside the door. Just shout if you need me.”

I nod my head. I love how he wants to give me time alone with my friend. As the door closes, I turn my attention back to Damon. “I need you to wake up, Day. I need to know you’re going to be okay, because I can’t live with myself if you’re not okay. This is all my fault. I’m the reason you’re lying in this bed and I’m sorry for that. No apology will ever be enough.” I stroke my fingers over the inside of his palm as I allow the teas to come. “I lost the baby. It’s hard to explain Day, but I feel like something is missing in me now. Like I’ve lost a little piece of myself. It was a boy.”

I swallow, trying to control my tears. Hearing myself tell him the baby has gone makes it all feel very real. “Anyway, you need to get better. I need you to wake up and be okay, Day. You have been there for me so much these last few months, and now I’m going to be there for you.”

There’s a light tap on the door and Milly sticks her head inside. “Hey, we’re back. How are we doing in here?”

I shrug my shoulders and smile at her. “We’re just catching up and I’m telling him I’m going to kick his arse if he doesn’t wake up soon.”

“You hear that, Damon? A girl is going to kick your arse,” Milly says, grinning as she comes up beside me and looks down at her brother. “He’ll be okay, Eliza. He’s strong, and he’s over the first hurdle.”

I nod my head firmly. She’s right. He’s going to be okay. He has to be okay because I can’t bear to think of any other outcome.

ELIZA

Ismile and shake my head as we pull up in front of the Savage mansion. Vee and Kit are holding up a welcome home banner and balloons. Rafe and Seb stand beside them, too cool to hold balloons and banners. My heart warms, knowing they are all here for me.

After five days in the hospital, the doctor finally deemed me medically fit for discharge. My arm is still in a cast, but it isn’t too painful. My ribs are healing nicely, too. The head hurts a little less each day but my memories of the accident and the events leading up to it are still fuzzy and full of gaps.

“I told them not to do this; that you needed quiet and rest, but they insisted,” Archer grunts, frowning at my welcome party as he turns the engine off.

“It’s nice,” I assure him, patting his leg. “Now be a good fiancé and help me out.” The boot on my right leg is a pain in the arse, but at least I’m not on crutches, and I can still hobble about. Archer comes round to my side of the car and opens the door. I wrap my arms around his neck, and he lifts me from the vehicle. He places me gently onto my feet, ensuring I’m steady before he lets go.
