“We’re on it,” Boyd assures him. “I have got half my team looking at every registered snake breeder and exotic pet shop within a seventy-mile radius. We’ll search further afield if we need to.”

“You do need to,” Archer insists firmly. “I mean it Boyd, no stone left unturned. My fiancée could have died today.”

It still sounds so odd when I’m referred to as his fiancée but I’m not going to lie and say I don’t like it. Because I kind of do like it, a lot. I look down at the ring on my left hand and I rub my finger across the ruby. I have a fiancé and he loves me. I can’t help the smile that breaks out on my face. This earns me an odd look from Boyd, who probably wonders what the hell I have to smile about when someone has just made an attempt on my life.

Edward and Wilbur both arrive ten minutes later and usher Boyd into Edward’s office to discuss the threat further. I hear Archer insist that I have more security with me at all times and I inwardly groan at the thought of having more people following my every move.

My phone rings and I pull it out of my pocket to see it’s Damon calling me.

“Hey.”

“I just heard. Are you fucking okay, princess?” I can hear the worry in his voice.

“I’m fine. I promise. It will take more than a venomous snake to take me down,” I jest, trying to make light of the situation.

“It’s not funny, princess. Someone tried to end you. I hope Savage is taking this seriously?”

I scoff. That is an understatement! “If you mean, am I going to be tailed by a team of elite bodyguards everywhere I go, then that would be a yes.”

“Good,” he says firmly. “Princess, have you told him yet?”

“Not yet. I was going to this morning.”

“Tell him. Soon. He needs to know that he has two of you to protect now,” Damon urges me.

I know he’s right. I’ll tell him when he’s less angry and he’s not wanting to go out and burn down the world to find who did this to me. I’ll tell him after the twins’ eighteenth party this weekend.

“This weekend, I promise. Oh, and by the way, this is your invite to the pre-party, party.”

Damon chuckles down the phone. “There’s a pre-party party?”

“Yep, Seb likes to milk the excuse to party for as long as he can, so Friday night there’s a pre-party at Archer’s house.”

There’s a pause of quiet before he answers. “I don’t think I’ll be welcome, princess. You know that.”

“You are welcome because you are my guest,” I insist. “I’ve told Seb you’re coming and that there’s no discussion about it. You can bring Milly.”

“I’ll think about it, princess. Actually, I was planning to ring you today, anyway. My sister invited you for tea on Friday night, but I guess if you have a party, you won’t be able to make it.”

“I can come,” I say. “The party doesn’t start until eight. That gives me time to come for tea. I’ll pick you up in my new ride.”

“Oh yes, the engagement present. Fancy!” His teasing tone doesn’t go unnoticed.

I blush even though he can’t see me. “I know, I know it’s ridiculously extravagant.”

Damon chuckles in reply. “I’ll let her know you can make it. You take it easy tonight, okay?”

“I will,” I assure him. I put the phone down to find Vee watching me with a pointed expression.

“What?”

“You know what!” she replies, looking out towards the corridor to check no one can hear us. “Tell him. Tonight.”

I shake my head. “I’m not telling him tonight. He’s too fired up and angry. Can you imagine how he’ll be if he finds out I wasn’t the only one put in danger today? No. I’ll tell him at the weekend when he’s had time to calm down.”

I can tell by the look on her face she doesn’t agree with me, but I know if I tell him now, he’ll explode. He’ll likely lock me in his room and not let me leave until I give birth. It’s better to wait and tell him after the party when he’s had a chance to wind down and have some fun. I rest my head against the back of the couch and close my eyes. I’m exhausted. Growing a baby and having someone make an attempt on your life is a tiresome experience.
