“Will my new scar be more impressive than yours?” He grinned, wiggling his brows.

I shrugged a shoulder. “We’ll see when they remove your bandages, but I doubt it.”

He shifted in the bed again, wincing in pain.

“I should let the nurse know you’re awake.”

“No, wait. How are you and Tiff?”

“Like sisters.” I scrunched my shoulders tighter around my neck.

“Seriously?”

“No, but we’re good, and I think we have an understanding.”

“What kind of understanding is that?”

“That we both love Kensi.”

His fingers weaved through my mine, and his eyelids lowered. I counted five breaths, and for a moment, I thought he’d fallen asleep, but he opened his eyes and turned his head my way.

“I didn’t know about Kensi when we had her. I thought she was mine,” he whispered. “Tiffany—”

“It doesn’t matter anymore, my love. We have our girl, and you should rest now. We need you strong, so just… rest.”

He closed his eyes. I waited until he fell asleep for the night before leaving for home. Tiffany stayed over with Kensi. We removed cushions from the couches and made a gigantic bed on the family room floor. The kids slept in the middle between me and Tiffany. I tossed through the night, praying their father would win his fight.

CHAPTER 20

JAMES

“Daddy, do you like it?” Kensi spun in her peach dress Tiffany had picked out for today. I closed my laptop and pulled away from my desk. Everything was ready for the day, and I had one last task.

“It’s beautiful. You look like a sunflower.”

“Mommy Tiffany said I look like a rose, and my dress matches Laila’s.”

It was cute how Kensi had come to calling both Tiffany and Laura her mommies. I lowered myself to the ground and pinned a rose into her hair.

“You know what? I think Mommy Tiffany is right. You look perfect, but there’s something missing.”

I narrowed my brows and crouched in front of her.

“What is it?”

I reached behind her ear and magically pulled out a necklace. Kensi’s mouth opened wide.

“How did you do that?”

“If I told you, it wouldn’t be magic, would it?”

She shook her head quickly.

“Turn around, baby, so I can put this on.”

I fastened the clasp and swept the six heart charms to the front.

“Why are there so many hearts, Daddy?”
